euroman Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 my wifes 92 lumina has developed a problem where it clicks when you turn the key,not every time, but enough to make things a real pain in the ass! I have replaced the starter, battery, and it has a new alt., all of these things items gave me the head fake and I thought it was fixed, but, sorry, no dice. Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance. Quote
Cam'ron Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 could it be a bad ground? makes sence to me if it only happens once in a while. Quote
euroman Posted August 16, 2005 Author Report Posted August 16, 2005 I checked the ground from the batt to ground, and it seemed ok. Batt. connections are tight, and clean Quote
jeremy Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 check the connection on the aux. terminal, I am guessing that the connection there is just loose Quote
jimmy91444 Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 under the dash, on top of the steering colum, the actual ignition switch is there. They go bad some time. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Battery cables could be shot as well... Quote
euroman Posted August 16, 2005 Author Report Posted August 16, 2005 cables"look" good, clean and tight,as far as the ign switch?, do my symptoms fit? Also, checked all terminals, ie starter, aux term, this is pissin me off now!!! Quote
maybe2fast Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 with a click noise that is the starter solenoid trying to turn the starter...the one you put on is most likely bad. see the starter is a electric motor that has brushes and moving pieces that wear out and they get flat spots and when that starter stops on the right spot it will only click and not crank. hope this helps Don Quote
euroman Posted August 16, 2005 Author Report Posted August 16, 2005 following this line, the starter I put on is a NAPA reman. While I was under the car I noticed the end cap on the starter moving when it did crank, sure as shi*, it was loose, so I tightened it up, but I'm wondering if the damage is already done. Quote
DOHCRagtopguy Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 If it does it again, give the starter a whack and see if it then works. Sometimes the brushes hang up inside causing an incomplete circuit. I have seen the light and now take my starters and alternators to a quality rebuilder by where I live, for about 95 bucks they do a quality job and put better than OEM parts in. I DO NOT want to do those jobs twice! Quote
euroman Posted August 18, 2005 Author Report Posted August 18, 2005 replaced starter again, and that did the trick! Wow, napa sells bad parts? Thanks again for everyones help Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 I've always had bad luck with Napa starters, either they suck right outta the box, or 6 months down the road. I always use AC Delco starters, or I rebuild my own. --Dave. Quote
DOHCRagtopguy Posted August 18, 2005 Report Posted August 18, 2005 The quality of labor for the shops that NAPA, Pep Boys, Autozone, etc. is very questionable in my opinion. Good help is hard to find, we have a couple of openings here at work, you should see some of the losers that come in here and apply. Unfortunately it seems that the US labor force is going downhill, that's why we're gradually being taken over by foreigners. It appears that the younger generation just wants to collect a paycheck for as little work as possible. Sorry, but I call it as I see it. The work ethic seems to be vanishing for most young Americans. Quote
