While cleaning the engine up, I noticed that the part in this picture looks really ugly and worn out. First of all, what the heck is it, and second, does the ragged appearance suggest that there is a problem with it?

That'd be the EGR valve

 

you might wanna check the hose under it for cracks, but other than that it looks fine
