do our computers relearn?

I used to have a old bmw with motronic and after I repaired a airleak after the air box, a tech told me to disconnect the battery and take it for a long drive so the computer would learn the new parameters. well now I just serviced my MAF sensor and I was wondering should I disconnect the battery and take it for a long drive? will the car still run on what it knows which was faulty or does it take in new info everytime its running 'as is' ? that motronic sounded so cool when I looked into all it incorporated in the computer (this was an 84!) but it was so expensive to repair, diagnose that I was afraid to wash the damn engine. even a BMW tech advised me not too and said if I had to that I should tape and bag the coil, computer, fusebox, and alt AND THAN let it sit for 24hours outside to dry!!

I always thought our ecm's continually adjust for different operating times to make the engine run optimum.....the only reason we have to unplug the ecm is to reset it so it forgets any codes I thought??

Sure, See if you get past 2 blocks with no battery!

the alternator will run the car without a problem, if you want to do it right, take out the ECM fuse in the fuse box for 15 minutes or so, put it back in and take it for a drive

regal are you on drugs? I'm not gonna run the car WITHOUT the battery. btw cars dont run on batteries, they run on alternators. starters are the only thing that needs a battery to operate

ugh, explaining electronics to youngins...

Your alternator charges the battery, the car draws its power off the battery. If you take the battery out after the car is running, you can technically drive, but you will surge the alternator anytime you use an accessory (ex: after you press the brake pedal, the brake lights shut off and that unused power would normally go back into the battery will surge into the alternator)
