digitaloutsider Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 What exactly does this do? I keep hearing and reading about it, but I never get an explaination of it does. About all I do know is that only the 5-speed cars have it. Thanks. Quote
GP1138 Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 air injection reaction system: (AIR system) The AIR system helps to reduce hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide levels in the exhaust by injecting air into the exhaust ports of each cylinder during cold engine operation, or directly into the catalytic converter during normal operation. It also helps the catalytic converter to reach proper operating temperature quickly during warm-up. If a GM cars has an air pump, the system is an AIR otherwise it is a PULSAIR system. http://www.100megsfree4.com/dictionary/car-dica.htm#AirInjectionReaction Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 i think the 5-speed cars got an AIR pump because of less load at idle due to no TQ converter or something like that. Quote
Robby1870 Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 But yeah....its fairly worthless Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 when i did my 5-speed swap i got rid of all that AIR crap. i ditched the 5-speed specific rear exhaust manifold in favor of a regular automatic equipt 3.1 exhaust manifold. i did have 1 or 2 extra plugs hanging from the wiring harness that weren't plugged in, but it never set the SES light or anything. digitaloutsider Posted August 11, 2005 Author Report Posted August 11, 2005 Okay, cool. Thanks guys! Quote
Canada Posted August 11, 2005 Report Posted August 11, 2005 AIR actually works pretty well for cold start emissions.......its really doesn't hinder engine performance. All it simply does is pump air into the exhaust for the first couple seconds then engine is running. Quote

Yeah, my dad and I rebuilt the top end on his old 85 toyota pickup a couple of years ago and we got rid of his AIR pump, which was much larger than than 5spd W's, and all of his emission stuff. You wouldnt believe how much room that freed up in the engine compartment Quote
Dan94Z34 Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 stupid emmissions. Not as bad as what califorina is doing now. http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=363229 read and you will find out. Looks like this county is moving more toward socialism every year. Quote
Hairdo12 Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 Kinda reminds me of the patriot act. Quote
Redwingvksm Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 Haha. I still have my WORKING ORIGINAL AIR pump on my 5.0... Gonna delete it soon thought (Metal tubes n' all also run correctly/work) Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 yeah i ditched the AIR setup on the '85 LM1 350 i swapped into my old '81 Malibu Classic Landau coupe. i kind did that the cheesy way though....all the air lines that went to the exhaust manifold were cut off and crimped shut  yeah i was young and stupid. i should have just gotten another set of non-AIR manifolds or just gotten headers instead. that was a long time ago. sspeedstreet Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 I was told by a friend who did emission certs that because the test equipment measures parts/million and not just the "parts", the point injecting air into the exhaust stream is simply to dilute the emissions for test purposes. Quote
