TurboGTU Posted February 10, 2003 Report Posted February 10, 2003 Would it be difficult to swap out a 2.5 from the 91 Lumina infavor of a 3.1/2.8 just cuz the 2.5 sucks(head , after head after head replacement). My brother just got one that was given to him to lower the payment on a car he sold to someone. It has the 3t40 auto. I know the computer will need to be from the 3.1 gp with 3speed auto, the wires, fuel pump, hoseses, lines, engine mounts from a doner car will need to be installed. I can get all of this for 100 , and its no big deal to my bro and I to do the job. But, will I need anything else? This is just a dependability job we are doing. My bro and I want to give this car to my parents since they liked it. Nice streight body no dents, perfect interior. Any info is apreciated. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted February 10, 2003 Report Posted February 10, 2003 I don't see why not. 99% of W-bodies came with V6's, so all the parts you need should be available at any salvage yard. Shouldn't cost much. I don't know if the tranny bellhousing bolt pattern is the same though. Quote
Robby1870 Posted February 10, 2003 Report Posted February 10, 2003 Im pretty sure that the 3T40 will bolt to the 3.1L. B/c wasnt it used pre 1990?? Anyway, I think the 3T40 will bolt to a 3.1L. -Robby Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted February 10, 2003 Report Posted February 10, 2003 It was... but other trannies like the HM282 had 4-cyl and 6-cyl versions because the Quad4 had a different bolt pattern. Quote
Robby1870 Posted February 10, 2003 Report Posted February 10, 2003 Yeah, I dont think the 3T40 was even used with a 4 cylinder. Correct me if Im wrong but I dont think it was. They were only used for 2.8/3.1. -Robby Quote
TurboGTU Posted February 11, 2003 Author Report Posted February 11, 2003 Yea, it does look like it will bolt up. I will use the torque converter from the v6. robby1870, I had dobble checked the trany and it is a THM125/3t40 on the 2.5 "Iron-fake-duke". It is the same trany as in my Beretta. The 90 Cutlass Supreme w/2.3 Vin D had a 3t40. Thanks Quote
patgizz Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 use the converter from the transmission, especially if you dont know what trans was originall on the motor you got to swap in Quote
Robby1870 Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Thanks for the info on the 3T40 applications, TurboGTU, thats good to know. Robby Quote
