What does the 3100 SFI sound like with no mufflers. Like is it really a law that says you gotta have mufflers? im thinkin bout slicin the muffler off of my 3100 cutty and put a y pipe and run duals out the back with no muflers, I sen on here that someone did side exits on a cutty, that sounds like it may be cool. But the main qustion is is it really somethin that says I must have mufflers and if i cut it off how will it sound?

Ummm, depending on your laws where you live, I'm gonna say don't run no mufflers, because cops wont leave you alone and it might be illegal

I agree with that, and no mufflers only sounds good on TGPs i hear, but iv never tried it, i doubt i will, ur car will just be obnoxiously loud and sound terible, so dont do it, and as chad said, the cops will notice u more, and it could be illeagle

yeah, about 700c.c's of displacement, and an eaton supercharger, how about glass packs?

The biggest difference isn't the displacement or the supercharger, it's the fact it's a 90º motor. 60º and 90º engines have radically different sounds, even if the displacement is very similar (i.e. 3300 and 3400)

I'm not sure how glasspacks will sound on a 3100...I don't think anyone on here has ever tried that route....all you usually hear is talk of magnaflow, dynamax, or flowmaster. I remember my dad had a glasspack on his '85 S-10(2.8L) back in the day and I really didn't notice anything out of the norm with it. I do remember that it didn't last that long...

I've heard a clip of a 3100 before with no mufflers. I'm not sure if the car had the stock resonator still in place or not though. It sounded pretty good but popped a bit when revved(I don't much care for that myself).

muffler fell off on our '85 buick century a while ago. i drove that thing for a couple months before i got my car without getting pulled over. it sounded ok i guess, just too loud obviously. with a 3.0 btw...

Run mufflers, unless you want the local popo screwing with ya all the time. We have a stupid exhaust law here. You have to have mufflers on gas engines, but you can legally run stright pipes on a diesel.

I tried it, and no, just dont do it, it's going to sound just bad and very very senseless loud, get a nice muffler and then a cat after it or before, but take the stock piece of old steel cat off first, then run the y pipe and get duals, its going to sound very nice, low rumble and nice during acceleration. I've gotten lots of compliments. Use a high flow cat tho.

I've heard quite a few GM engines without mufflers or even exhausts period. see the sound comin outthe engine is LOUD but not good loud more like chattering pots and pans. even a big 4.8 sounds like a firefly with no exhaust if you take the mufflers off. they sound cheap and you can tell somthing is deffinitly wrong with the car. you need a muffler, resonator or large piping to have the vibrations resonate into a BOOM! when you take off the mufflers and leave stock pipe it sounds like a tiny shite engine cuz the noise isnt resonating. if you ran like 2.5 or 3 inch pipe it would sound a bit better if any but really you'd lose so much power cuz theres absolutely no back pressure. its up to you but really if you thought of this as a cheap way to have a boomin exhaust your barkin up the wrong tree. buy some glass packs, dynomax, even twin resonators and than duals ANYTHING but straight pipe. this is really only an option for high power v8's I believe. and ya every cop within 5 miles would drop his doughnut and put that car on towtruck for blatantly breaking emissions laws.

personally I just found an exhaust leak right before the cat and being on a tight budget I'm gonna repair the leak, hollow out the cat while I'm in there and run dual glass packs out back. this set up should cost me no more than 70 bucks and I will be happy no matter how it sounds though I almost guarantee its gonna have even more of that throaty snarl I love about my engine

3100s are a bit different sounding than a 3.1, but not too much..

just trust me, it will be loud as fuck, and your neighbors will hate you when you come home at 2am 5 times a week. That said I do think it sounds cool, and there is a sweet spot around 2500 rpms (right before the point where a 4T60 will shift normally) where it will quiet down to normal dB. But accelerating, forget it. There's no hiding from cops there. I've been lucky so far myself.

Hell I drove around with no muffler on my GP for a good 8 or 9 months. It was loud as hell. I've never once EVER been pulled over for having a loud car here, nor have I heard of it ever happening. I gues in Georgia they just don't care.

My 2.8 without mufflers wasn't really any louder than any ricer with their fartcans...

It sounded similar (annoying as fuck). I didn't so much hate the acceleration, but the droany sound at 2k while cruising gave me a damn headache.

I had no muffler on my 3100 cutty cause it kept falling off after a bad clamp job and no access to a welder. A lot of people were suprised that there was no muffler on it because it really wasn't that loud, and to me it sounded decent. That was with all other factory exhaust in place (i.e. cat, resonator, etc...).

i had no muffler on my lumina forever, my parents didnt even notice. i had 100% original exhaust when i got it, i cut the muffler off straight and put a 15" piece of 2" pipe on it sraight out the back. it was actually rather quiet. well quieter than the rotted out stock muffler.

remember if you dont go huge on the pipe it wont be too loud and you wont lose too much backpressure.
