kknobl Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 I've heard of disconnecting the EGR to avoid that dreaded SES light. Anyone ever done this? And if so, is it something as simple as disconnecting a wire? What were your results? Thanks, Kevin Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 ??? Where have you heard that from? Disconnecting the EGR will CAUSE an SES light to come on.* edit*: definetly came out the wrong way the first time Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 well, not cause it to go "off" but it'll trip a code to light it up... (but I do believe that's what you meant anyhow) if I remember correctly, Removing the EGR will almost always set a code as the engine will try to open the EGR to raise the idle every now and then just to make sure it's working properly. --Dave. Yeah, it'll set a code if you unplug it. If you want to disable the EGR without a code being thrown you'll have to do it in the chip. Quote
manitcor Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 or block off the egr holes with a plate and leave the egr plugged in. Quote
5speedz34 Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 or block off the egr holes with a plate and leave the egr plugged in. I've never heard of anyone doing it that way but that would work! I would just try to get the chip, it helps out with alot of different things with the car. Quote

How much does the chip cost, and what is the procedure for installing it? Thanks! Kevin Quote
kknobl Posted August 12, 2005 Author Report Posted August 12, 2005 Year? Engine? 1993 3.1 MPFI. Thanks, Kevin Quote
Robby1870 Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 Year? Engine? 1993 3.1 MPFI. Thanks, Kevin Go to http://www.60degreev6.com and click on the 60degreev6 store link at the top of the page. There are chips there that not only give you 5-6 more dyno proven hp at the wheels, but you can turn your EGR off. They have instructions for installation there as well. Cost is $125. The site seems to be down right now, so try later today. The guy that runs the site is Ben. His screen name is Vegeta on this board. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 When you unplug or take out the EGR, it will kill your gas mileage. and especially with gas prices the way they are, it will cost ya. I know when I had a problem with my EGR MPG around town went down to about 20MPG. When it was fixed, Im getting 25MPG. BTW, is it a bad EGR thats causing your SES light to come on or do you just not want it there? Quote

BTW, is it a bad EGR thats causing your SES light to come on or do you just not want it there? Taking it out is different that having a faulty one. For all you know the faulty one could have been dumping ehxaust gas in all the time, thus killing your gas mileage. The EGR valve only opens at low throttle times around town and while cruising. All it does is put inert gas into the combustion chamber to basically take up space, all while making your intakes dirty as hell. There was a thread about a year ago discussing this. The conclusion was that deleting the EGR *might* cause a SLIGHT hit in MPG but will not give any performance gains. Taking the EGR out will not drop you from 25mpg to 20mpg. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 That drop in gas mileage was because I had one that was on its way out, not because I removed it. But it will cause a loss in MPG, just not as much as having a bad one. Quote
streetdreams Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 I know 2 guys with small blocks who plated over the egr holes. somthing about performance=ridding the emissions system. I dont know or care much because I wouldnt remove it in my car. if my egr gets clogged the car runs like a bag so I keep it clean. if yours is a vacuum tyoe you can just press on the diaphram to see if its working. if you press it the engine will studder or bog a bit and that means its working. if its a mewer type I'd just take it off, clean it out with some cleens or whatnot and replace it with a new gasket. its cheap and really just yearly maintenance if you want the car to run good Quote
MoTox8410 Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 egr=exhaust gas recirculation?? i thought that it burned nox and it opens when heavily accelerating (personally saw this when i had a computer hooked up to the car) because this is the only time that it can burn the nox effectively and not kill the car. if the egr was opened in low throttle situations the car would die Quote

There are 3 valves which will open thus making 7 different combinations for different types of driving. Quote

I removed mine mainly because of the 3400 swap but now that I have ODBII im thinking of putting it back and seeing if I get any better mileage out of it. Quote
