sonyman87
well. Looks like the lumina is going to retire very damn soon and its not from the transmission.. pull into work today and smoke starts pooring out from under the hood. i pop it and it smells like burning oil. the source although veage from what i can tell is right by the exaust manifold in the very front on piston numbre 5 or 6.. whatever is on the driver side front. what i dont understand is that it only does it when it gets up to operating tempes. There is No powerloss and it dosn't overheat. i have no idea what really is going on. anything like this happen to you guys? the night befor i added some water to the radiator and bleed the system a little. it was a touch on the low side and i only added ~ 1/2 gallon of water or more. joey b
cam cover?
sonyman87
cam cover? Nope.. + they have somewhat new gaskets on them. just over a year old they are i think its just the syntheic oil breaking down on hot motor parts but that still dosnt explain why it stoped after i added 1 qt of oil. bartonmd
This may seem a bit... um... easy... but you haven't checked your valve cover gasket have you? I've had valve cover gaskets that leak onto the exhaust, which smokes it up under the hood... Mike

I've had valve cover gaskets that leak onto the exhaust, which smokes it up under the hood... Mike had the same problem after I redid the HGs on my moms Grand Marquis. Turns out the left valve cover gasket didnt seat in the groove properly. I was confused because i coulnt find the oil due to the fact it was all burning up. I was confused because i coulnt find the oil due to the fact it was all burning up. valvecover gaskets are fine.. i think i figured it out.. when i opend the bleed line some coolant trickled down into the exaust manifold heat sheild and assuming there is some old dirt + oil in the cover the coolant picked some up and when the motor got hot it started to evaperate / boil and making the smoke. after the 2nd time it did it it stoped and just stanke for a while then now its gone. so it was something i did without know it.
