LQ-1 Alternator Blues

Well, it was time to do the alternator on my Olds. Everything went smoothly, popped out the axle, bottom bolt out, top bolt out. Now for the back bolt. Man, I got no room!! So I dropped the back of the subframe about an inch. Now I can get my small 10 mm on it, but not enough torque to break it free. Don't know how the hell I'm gonna get this friggin bolt off. Any ideas? About 1 inch of working room. I mean, I did the one on wifey's motor and that one was much easier, don't know why. I know one thing, that bolt ain't going back when its reassembled! Fuck that bolt!!

Time to knock off for tonight and pound some suds and have an attitude adjuster. Man these suck!!!

Saw this on the 60degreev6.com dohc maintenance forum about removing the rear bolt.

3.4 DOCH rear bolt removal the easy way....

I assume you've aready got the cooling ducting out of the way...

Grab yourself a long 10MM wrench.

NOT the standard lenght 10mm wrench.

Place wrench on bolt guiding it with your hand.

You should be able to see the BOX end of the wrench poking out

from the ALT.

Now, grab your self a rachett and attach the longest extenstion you can find. Half inch i think.

It just so happens that the 10mm box end of the wrench will accept the end of the extension perfectly.

Insert extention end into Box end of wrench.

Now you can lossen the rear bolt enough to finger it out the rest of the way....

And also found it on this forum with pictures

Well, kudos to the guy that came up with that method. Thanks to that and my son with his smaller hands, that goddam bolt is out along with the alternator.

This is one of the rewards of parenthood, I used to fix his junkers when he was younger, now he came over with his family to go swimming and asked me what I was pissed off over, I told him and described the method, we went out to the garage and he got the fucker out. I'll be taking it to the rebuild shop this week and the Olds should be back on the road by next weekend.

This is one of those days where my son really made me proud. And why not, he learned from the best!!!

Glad it worked out. Nice color combo on your convertible. Looks like the metallic blue color which you don't see too often.

Ours is a '95 triple black convertible, but like the way the convertible looks in blue. Just couldn't find one when I was car shopping.
