replacing power steering line!?!? - fixed...new Rack/Pinion

how the FUCK does one do it? I've tried all kinds of shit, and naturally, i lost my chilton

I need to replace the pressure line, but how the fuck does it come off the R&P? I was fixin to pull my engine for other reasons, but turns out i didn't need to.

I went out and bought new "Crows foot" tools, and they sit on there great, but i can't get the damn thing to turn loose. Is it just tight as fuck?

My car's been sitting for 4 months..and this is the last goddamn thing keeping it from running!!!!!!!!!!!! It leaks all the fluid by the time i get out of the driveway!

You just brought back a bad memory of mine. I ended up dropping the rear of the subframe, cutting the bad line off it and pulling the whole R&P out of the car. Like a moron, I had rounded off the fitting while it was in the car.

damnit! That's encouraging!

So...damn...i so knew this shit would happen. One fucking thing left to move the car in four months and it's going to be damn near impossible to do this without any major work. WTF GM.

Any suggestions on getting it out while the front end is still all one conjoined piece?

the way I did it was I cut the line, and used a socket to pull the fitting outta the rack - that's the hardest part of that job.

lowering the subframe makes a WORLD of difference on the 3.4's but the 3.1's should be (if I remember correctly) a bit easier without havin' to lower it.

replacing that line was cake on my 3.1 Cutlass. i just put the car on jackstands, climbed under it and used an 18mm combination wrench to remove the line. i don't know, maybe i had more room to work with since i have a 5-speed

good luck

Dave- damn, i didn't even think about that! May as well hack it up since it's fucked anyway! I'll have to try that when i get back home from work. I need to find my dremel

Josh - Yea the main thing that's in the way is my tranny. Otherwise i could get underneath it and have wrench/arm room!

I had gone out and bought a set of "Crows foot" tools (like a wrench head you can put on perpindicular to a ratchet), which i can tell i'll use these in the future...but not workin for this. I could get it on there, but where the ratchet was positioned i had no room to move my arms, and where i could move my arms the foot slipped off. I tried with a 1", 3", and pointlessly, a 6" extension on the crows foot 18mm. Damn my long arms!

when i get home from work i'll hack it up some, and use a 18mm socket and we'll see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestions!

how long did that take? This whole project is taking abnormally long, and i'm getting lazy

I have a friend with a dremel, i just have to at least find some cutting blades. THere's definately enough room to squeeze that in there. If not i'll find my hacker :D

well, I actually used a hacksaw blade with a peice of metal rod to cut the line.

the whole project, on the hoist, took about 3 1/2 hours - but there were more problems then just that one part.

alright, well i got the shit hacked off, but naturally the socket started to round off the bolt at the R&P...so i just put a bunch of JB weld onto a 18mm socket, and i'm letting it sit overnight...

that's one way to do it  and why not, most sockets are cheap enough anyway

it's probably too late now, but you REALLY don't want the JB Weld to get down into the rack, so I'd put something down in the tube to stop the weld from going down there...

Tony - ya harbor freight has them for like $1/piece or something

Mike - no worries. I actually put the JB weld around the line then slipped the socket on there :)

Shawn - haha...yea i got that mixed up when i was trying to take the line off the pump  I turned it and i was like WTF! Now it's harder!

well we'll see what happens i guess :D

well, i got the piece off! However, i stuck on the new line, and someshit must have crawled up in there last night

it won't even turn...it sounds like the R&P is fucked. I said fuck it, i have some cash, i'm having a new R&P put in tomorrow!

Damn, that sucks, but when you say it won't turn, do you mean you can't thread the new one in? Might just be you need to get the angle of the pipe just right.

i got the new line in, i'm saying the actual wheels won't turn. And i think the R&P cracked or something. I got the new line all the way in, and when i started it and went to turn the wheel, i heard something, and then a squirting sound. Went and looked, PS fluid was all over the place

I'd look a bit deeper before spending the hard earned dough on a new rack... those aint cheap! It may be as simple as fittings not tightened up all the way or air in the lines blowing fluid out of the reservour or something... look a bit deeper and find out EXACTLY what it is before spending the money is all I'm saying...

Mike - i was actually wanting a new R&P anyway. Being I'm building up the suspension and what not on this car for superior handling, i think a new R&P will add towards it.

Plus...my mom just offered to pay for it :D

alright...well...

one tranny, one RACK AND PINION, two power steering lines, two tie rods, two tie rod ends, two CV joints, two tires, one ICM, one set of plug wires, and two brake calipers later....i got to drive it home today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He started it on the rack and backed it up and said "it's all yours". I jumped in, then i had to go park it and pay for the repairs. I skreeched the tires a bit (forgot how sensitive my pedal is!), and went and parked it. I got out and had the biggest smile in the world!

Then, i pulled out, and i said well i'll go to Whataburger and get some food. I got out...and i hear a "sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss" sound...WTF!?! Hole in the tire! motherfucker!!!!

naturally, it was 6:45, and all three places in town that will even look at a tire close at 7, and it's losing air FAST. Also...my spare's at home! Fuckin awesome! SO i called up my girl, had her go get my spare and my jack, then we put on that wannabe of a tire. That thing looks like shit tucked up inside a B4U

Sooo....tomorrow...tire patch and new water pump...jesus the bill is racking up this month for the GP!!!
