Bought a K&N OEM Style Filter

Well after I found that my old filter was totally plugged up with dust and whatnot, I decided I'd bite the bullet and buy a K&N filter for the old 3.1 .

After spending more then a should have ($104cdn w/taxes) I put it in.

The ass dyno says better torque down low, and a little better pull. The thing still sucks balls at high RPM, but in the words of HokemBokem, "What can you do? What the fuck can you do?"

Anyway, I'd say if anyone wants just a very slight increase to low end torque for their old 3.1 I'd recommend buying one. The engine also sounds a little better. I didn't expect just an air filter to fix my incrediably slow car, but it did help a bit.

Only differance I ever noticed from a drop in was 1-2mpg better. (thats good but mine sounded exactly the same) Now that cone filter is a whole differant story haha.

I heard the cone one causes loss of low end torque....and that's all my engine is good for, so I didn't want to hurt that lol.

Anyway, we'll soon see if it helps fuel mileage or not....probably will since the old one should have been replaced a while ago :leaving:

a cone filter that sits level with the engine bay wont do shit for the motor except make that sound.....a K&N drop in IMO would be a better buy instead of a WAI...

but nice Jeff!! I was impressed with mine too, but wtf does $104 come to in CAD??

mine was like $45 US dollars

Well I take in up the ass with taxes (14%)...but anyway, it was still expensive.

I found it 20% off at another store, so I'm going to get the difference tomorrow because when I bought it I asked if I find it cheaper can I get the difference and the cashier told me I could, so that's what I'm gonna do tomorrow.

I'm guessing 104can is around $85US

It was $91.99can before tax which is $75US

I know I got ripped off, but it'll all be fixed tomorrow :D

Plus I gotta make a run to the j/y because I noticed the lid on my airbox is cracked. So I sealed it up temporailry, but I'm going tomorrow to get a new air box lid...

Since you're gonna have 2 boxes why don't you try chopping off the bottem of the old one, it should suck in more air you may notice a difference in power, possibly.

I have a K&N in my car (OEM style) and noticed nothing. I honestly don't know if I would bother buying another one, unless it was used like the one I got.

I believe it was proven that it didn't do anything, but don't hold me to it.

wow, i'm surprised those K&N panel filters are so expensive! i just got my K&N RU-1770 cone filter last night from Summit, and it was only $31.

that is a TON of $ for a K&N.......

I know around here they are about $40 for one at autozone. Wal-Mart is selling the drop-ins now too I think.

My dads Envoy takes a cone one from the factory, it was like 70 bucks too!

They are expensive here (in Canada I guess) for some reason. At Canadian Tire they're at least $70CAD. That's why I just bought a used one from someone on here (I forget) for $20US. Then I got the recharge kit and cleaned it up, since they last forever.

Since there seems to be a bit of a debate on K&N drop-in filters and WAIs, lets get some fact on the matter.

Here is a dyno chart.....

Stock%20vs%20KN%20vs%20RSM.JPG

Thats of my Beretta with a 3100, 2.25" exhaust and UDP. Stock box and Fram paper filter, K&N drop-in, and RSM Racing's WAI.....

Intake.jpg

With the K&N drop-in, I noticed the same as sl3196 did...going to a WAI produced the same fuel economy. Most people notice this, or what Canadian Billy Badass has. If you aren't concerned with performance that much, it is worth it....however, its not a magic bullet.

IIRC, the RSM was $180US....the K&N was $40ish. At the time, the RSM was the only option. Since then, Tranzgenic (a company the W body world didn't want to mess with) makes a nice CAI for the L chasis....and I current have on the car. It sells for about the same price, and is a very good option.

With the K&N as my only mod, the Beretta ran 16.115 @ 84.87 mph. I don't have a stock comparison, take it for what its worth.
