ragejg
I put my '91 Lumina 3.1 in storage a while back @ 206k. I kinda figured the motor was shot, and proceeded to buy another Lumina (or 2, lol)... It started HEAVILY knocking, and the sound came from the front cylinder bank just under the rocker arms... I still had all my rpm range, and no oil burning or excess smoke, but I had assumed that a valve or 2 (or lifter or two) had gone bad... At the time I didn't want to invest heavily, so I just shelved the car. Now I'm wondering if maybe all teh motor needs is a few hundred dollars worth of work... I'm not too versed on the internals of the 60 deg. 3.1... if valves or lifters need to be replaced on the front cylinder bank, what all has to be removed? The intake manifold and the head? Or does the motor have to be removed? I'm thinking of resurrecting this car, and I'd do it if it wouldn't cost too much. If I'm looking at a hefty bill and a lot of work, then I'll just keep the car shelved and do an L27 swap with it next year...
Robby1870
If the valves are shot, the head has to be pulled. If its a lifter, just the upper and lower intake manifold. More than likely a knocking from the top of the engine is a downed lifter.
Cutlass88er
Get the Hanes book @ checkers, it has a great tear down of the 3.1(assuming that's what you got).
