Trueno
Just bought a 4dr. 91'"t" cutlass supreme,100k very clean except for rockers.Paid $700 and body shop qoutes about $500 to replace rocker panels on both sides /paint. I've seen a few with this problem, car looks mint otherwise.Planning to try and slow down the process with por-15 rust coating. Anyone have any remedys as to replacing panels or slowing the process down? Thanks, Bob.

Trueno
Thanks for replying so fast. No pics but the bottom of rockers are rusty with pieces of body panel rusted through along the edge below doors.there is only one half dollar size hole on the rocker itself under the door step.Body shop said it would last 2 yrs. the way it is or 4-5 if they fix it.Thats the reason for a little work might last longer. Thanks, Bob
1990lumina
When you get some pics, please post them, they can help me at least better understand the extent of the damage However, if there is alreayd holes and whatnot in there, it might be to far gone, and that POR-15 stuff would be a help, but whats done is done, and cancer that has gone to the extent yours seems to have it difficult to stop less cutting out the bad metal and welding in new. It all depends on what you want this car for as well. Is it a beater? Daily driver? Maybe something more when the problems are fixed?? The thing is if you put in some money to get it fixed up, you might not regain that money ever again if you decide to sell - that's how I look at things anyway
Trueno
Actually bought the car for my daughter "sweet 17"$$ and she will use it as a daily driver to look for a job.Couple of buddies at work said it might need to be cut out later an weld in new rockers.Looking for a quick fix to stop whats done and paint it white.Body shop said the same if needed. So for now maybe under coat.? THANKS,Bob
J
por-15 and then prime and spray bomb for now
1990lumina
You could also buy a can or two of under body coating tar stuff....and spray paint that white after it dries. It may not look the best, but it will stop the rust from continuing as long as mositiure and salt and everything doesn't get to the metal
3pt1lumina
the amount of rust doesnt seem all that bad. on my car i had to rebuild the entire panel underneath the back door and all behind the rear wheel on the rear fender. what I did was put galvanized metal in there (I used heating duct metal) and it worked fine!. Then I glassed over it with Duraglass. DO NOT use Bondo because it is porus and will retain water. Duraglass is water resistant. My Bondo jobs came back every single year on my cars but once I switched to Duraglass I haven't had to do anything at all and its been almost 3 years on my Lumina and almost 4 on my chevelle. Not only does it look 1/2 way decent (IMO) but it is lasting.
Intlcutlass
I got done with that job over the winter.... My rockers didn't look really bad, but when I cut into them, they almost fell off, I cut as much out as I could , then re-contructed them with fiberglass and POR-15'd everything within reach. It's not a perfect job, but you can't see them anyway because the silver ground effects go directly over the troubled area...
White93z34
$500 is not a bad price AT ALL for a body shop to take on that task.
