kknobl
All, In case you can't tell, I'm new to the W-Body world. Still trying to get as much info about these cars as I can. My temp gauge tends to run at 220 (half way) a majority of the time. Accelerating will cool it down (more airflow). I'm getting the T-Stat replaced and coolant flush done this weekend hopefully. Idling, the temp will ramp up to 240-250ish before the fan kicks on. Which leads to my question. The passenger side fan does NOT seem to operate at all. If the temp creeps to 240, then the drivers side fan will come on and cool things off. Turn on the A/C still nothing from the other fan. Any ideas? Relay, bad fan motor? I know this question has probably been asked 55 million times, so thanks in advance for your patience. Kevin
cutty
i have the same problem except i have a new t-stat. but my a/c doesnt work at all.

digitaloutsider
Another question easily answered IF PEOPLE READ THE W-BODY FAQ'S. Q11. At what temperature do the cooling fans come on at? (3.1) A11. 220 and 227 respectively.

It was a question about one of the fans, not the temp at which they go on. BTW, the second fan did NOT go on at 227 or even 240, hence my question. Thanks for your help! digitaloutsider
Okay, I'll admit I stopped reading when I saw "My temp gauge tends to run at 220 (half way) a majority of the time. Accelerating will cool it down (more airflow). I'm getting the T-Stat replaced and coolant flush done this weekend hopefully." You can try manually jumpering the 2nd cooling fan to see if it even works at all. It it does, your anti-freeze is just chock full of sludgy goodness or some other mess to prevent it from cooling properly and/or the t-stat is bad. Make sure you get a good, quality thermostat, or you might up with the same problem as soon as you're done. Oh good lord, if my engine ever got to 227, I would shit a brick...I don't think its ever seen over 200? Welcome to the world of W-bodies... FastSE2DR
his gauge could be innaccurate...mine reads the last bar from the top(the top is 260 right?) When i hook it up to a scan tool it says only like 212....and i trust the ECU more than an analog gauge in an 11yr old car
GnatGoSplat
Get a pretty good sized wire. Pull out the fan relay. Using the wire, jumper across the terminals corresponding to #30 and #87. The fan should come on. If it doesn't, your fan motor is bad. VERY common problem.

My car hit 250 when the fans werent working...and I didnt know it. Nothing bad happened
kknobl
his gauge could be innaccurate...mine reads the last bar from the top(the top is 260 right?) When i hook it up to a scan tool it says only like 212....and i trust the ECU more than an analog gauge in an 11yr old car Yes, 260 is the top. The thought that the gauge may be off calibration occurred to me as well. Fans are supposed to come on at 220 and 227, but mine don't come on until it hits 235-240. Maybe the gauge is off by about 7-10 degrees...If so, then temps are not really a concern, since it tends to run around 220 for the most part (according to the gauge). Can I buy a scan tool to test it myself? Thanks for all the feedback - I knew the W-Bodies had their quirks. I'm just trying to get a feel for some of them. Thanks again, Kevin
john99gtp
wow, and i cringe when mine passes
THe_DeTAiL3R
My secondary fan hasn't ever worked (that I know of) either. I need to change my t-stat and coolant... it gets pretty hot and when I got my A/C to kick in the other day still only the 1st fan kicks in. I need to do what Shawn said.. slick
When I use my A/C, mine runs fairly warm as well. Looks like i need to check my fan out as well.
THe_DeTAiL3R
Changed my t-stat and coolant today.. letting the engine sit and idle (probably over 15min) it stayed around half 210*F or so. Before it would get up to around 240 or so, having the fan kick on and off all the time. Of course it would be no more than 1/3rd when I'm actually driving at a decent speed, I think now it should run even cooler than that. THe_DeTAiL3R
Okay I'm starting to hijack this thread, but I don't want to start a new one. If I test out my secondary fan and it works, can I wire it in parallel with the main one, or would that be too much load? Only other thing I have that really takes any power is my 800w Kenwood amp, which makes my lights dim when I have it pounding hard. I need a damn battery guage! kknobl
Just an update - had the cooling system flushed yesterday. The engine seems to run cooler - usually around 210-215 verses 220-240 like it was prior to the flush. Since I've had it done, the temp hasn't really approached 240 and it seems more constant, even in mixed driving. Thanks for your help.
