Tranny Problems

Ok i have a 94 grand prix with the 4T60E(duh) and it doesnt like to go into 4th gear or overdrive...sometimes it does if i flutter the pedal at around 50mph but that hasnt happened for awhile...anyway its not good for my car to drive at 3k+ on the highway especially all the way from MN to NY and back...does it sound like a mechanical problem or is it something with the TCM? At one point 4th gear and OD would work if i shut the car off and back on again. Now it doesn't work at all. Do you think a flush would help anything? Im guessing it would be cheap to buy a used tranny than to have mine rebuilt/fixed. Give me any input you have.

Thanks,

Tony

I dunno if the 4T60E has this, but on the 4T60 like my car, the torque converter solenoid likes to fuck up and not engage the torque converter.

Someone more knowledge will chime in for you, I'm sure of it :D

Sounds familiar. Mine only does that once in a great while, and when it happens, I throw it in neutral and keycycle, and it goes away. I hope it's something simple, because mine has thrown a code for "Transmission Range Switch".. I'd try that first.

i thought a 4T60E was a 4spd with overdrive meaning it went 1, 2, 3, 4 and then locked up the converter? I'm hoping its an electrical/computer thing but it hasnt pulled any codes...any more ideas?

The TCC isn't overdrive. 4th gear is a high ratio gear setting, basically running lower than a 1:1 ratio, allowing engine revs to stay low while maintaining speed. You can get a 3 speed with TCC lockup just like you can get an OD transmission with TCC lockup.

The THM-125 is a non TCC-lockup three speed transmission. The THM-125c is a three-speed transmission WITH TCC-lockup.

If you wanna think about it that way, it goes 1, 2, 3, TC lock up, 4.

Actually....

The transmission shifts 1, 2, 3, 4. Then the torque converter locks itself up. TCC is *on* only in 4th gear in all Hydra-matic transmissions.

To test to see if the TCC is working properly.......drive at highway speeds.....press the brake pedal with your left foot maintaining speed with your right and watch the tach. RPMs will rise as the brake lights turn on if everything is working properly.

To test to see if its shifting 4th.....select D or 3 (I'm not sure how your selector is marked...whatever is the one back from top gear. Drive at highway speeds and watch the tach drop as you push the selector from 3 to 4. And RPMs rise as you shift from 4 to 3.

Overdrive simply means that there is a gear ratio that is overdriven....meaning more rpms are coming out than are being put in, a ratio higher (smaller number) than 1:1. All of GM's 5 or 6 speed manual transmissions top gears are this as well. Here are the gear ratios for the 4T60/4T60-E/4T65-E...

1st...2.92

2nd...1.568

3rd...1.000

4th...0.705

R...2.385

Final drives change from a 2.93/2.97 in the L and N cars.....to a 3.33 in W 3.1....to a 3.43 behind a LQ1.

I wouldn't shutgun a range switch until the position the indicator says its in is different from the position its actually in.

my TC locks up in 3rd and 4th, like any other W 4T60 Ive driven, right around 35mph it'll lock up at normal acceleration.

yeah mine used to lock up at 35 in 3rd gear...i know for a fact its not shifting and the converter isnt locking up...i can drive all day with it in D and move it to 3 and not feel a damn thing and the rpms dont change...and when driving i can feel the converter not locking up. I know that for sure...im just trying to figure out why

hey i had this same problem. When drive at around 60 put your foot behind the brake pedal and pull it towards you. The brake switch may be out of adjustment. Keep us posted. I put in a new tranny to figure that out. son of a bitch car.

That would explain the converter issue, but it should still shift to 4th gear.

here's a shot in the dark and a "maybe" type problem solver..

you may have a ground wire going bad somewhere, and the Trans isn't getting the proper signal to control the solenoids, try adding a ground wire from the frame to somewhere on the transmission...

it probably won't fix it, but it's worth a shot, electricial issues can be really funny that way.
