There are a few aftermarket cams for this engine, but does anyone know if the engine has to come out of the car to install one?

If anyone's done this how do you like it?

the cams in the catalogs dont do much, your other choice is a custom regrind, there is also http://www.milzymotorsports.com/

Regrinds are iffy....I think comp will still give you a custom grind for just a bit more than the catalog cams for that type of engine. If you aren't looking for anything extreme, one of the catalog cams would be fine.

And yes, you can swap the cam without pulling the engine, you just have to cut a round hole in the inner fender to make room for the cam to come out. There is a write-up on here somewhere.....

Crower, Crane, or Comp Cams are probably your best bet, a few of them are just about stock, however, some of the bigger cams will cause havoc with the computer, so tuning would be in order there. Or yes a Custrom Grind will work, I have a custom grind from Crower which was had for $147.xx

Talk to invasion1. He had a cam in his old 3.1 and he said he liked it. I believe he went with the same one for his 3.1 turbo too. He'll be able to help you out as i know he has had one in his 3.1 and give you the inside scoop.

I have always liked the Crane H260 for N/A and turboed 3.1's, it works good with both. The 272 is a little big to run with the stock computer. However, if I were you I think I would look at the Comp Cams 260 cam. It seems to do very well in N/A cars, especially with 1.6 rockers and head work.

My Crane H260 seems to be great. Obviously I can't tell what kinda gain it made because I changed the heads/intakes at the same time and also installed an UD pulley, ported the exhaust manifolds, etc..... But it sounds similar to stock, still idles well, and the car ran great. I was impressed by it and I'd use it again if I had the chance to. I almost ordered another one about a month or so ago for my Lumina until I started having tranny problems.

And you definately don't have to pull the engine. Just loosen up the lower motor mounts (you should already have the dogbones disconnected with the engine torn down this far) and jack the engine up a little bit so you can drill the hole in the fenderwell to pull the cam out of. Here are some pics of mine:
