New 3.4 rebuild!!!

RenegadeZ

Recommended Posts

Ok guys & gal, I've been reading the performance things etc... Here's my deal, I plan on buying a new 3.4 to put in my Z. I'm going to be getting a new car in the fall but I plan on buying a new 3.4 motor & rebuilding it. I know some things & I'm learning more everyday...

What are some mods I could/should do to unleash more power?

I know a "chip & pulley" , I'm talking the proper things to do to make it a beast... let's not forget about that tranny!!! any input would be appreciated.

Crower H-Beam rods, C.P. Pistons, total-seal gapless rings, oil-squirters machined into the block shooting at the bottom of the pistons, chamfered oil holes on the crank, high-volume oil pump, deck the block back to true from the crank centerline, machine down the heads along with extensive port work, lighter valves, lighter lifters, and better springs (not sure what springs or other valve items, see others for that info) ... you can do a LOT to increase this motor like you wouldn't believe ...

high-volume oil pump...and better springs

The high volume oil pump will just make our bearing issue an even bigger problem, this assuming you can find a high volume pump in the first place. Our problem isn't that our pump doesn't flow enough, it is that at 7000rpm, it is flowing too much, essentially "drying out" the bottom end.

Better springs won't do much of anything in that situation, besides take away power. He can't run past 7150rpm with the ECU, and with our excuse for an intake manifold, going past that is near impossible anyways. And since our factory springs are good to 7200rpm, he will be fine. Also, with the lighter lifters and valves he mentioned, he won't need better springs even if he wanted to go past 7k, the lightened valvetrain raises where valve float occurs.

I'd suggest boring the motor, and bumping compression a bit. Going farther is very expensive, and not worth it.

You and your ECU and not exceeding 7150rpms, get an OBDII or aftermarket ECU to control the beast if you want to go passed those rpms. Just because it cant be done with that computer, doesnt mean it cant with others.

If you got the cash, I would suggest getting custom pistons/rods to stroke out the motor on the stock crank. I after I punched a few numbers in the sticky, it looks pretty tempting to do. You can still bump up that compression, bore out the cylinders, and with the longer stroke and decking the block/heads you should be able to make a very beneficial quench area.

I recomended the higher volume oil pump for the oil squirters on the bottom of the pistons..

as for the springs, I threw that in, because it's a typical upgrade for most cars ... it's good to know they'll handle the higher in stock form...

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Stroke the motor on the stock crank

Use common sense next time, that does nothing for stroke.

I forgot about the squirters, you may need a higher volume pump to supply them. The stock springs can't take much more, but with a lighter valvetrain volume, valve float will be pushed back.

I still want to motor to be a 3.4L DOHC, so @ a glance it seems "normal" till I hit the gas... its more or less a project that will be started after I get my new vehicle.

Have you checked out the AMG site?

The only thing stopping me right now from not doing the switch is that I live in Canada.

If I could stand the exchange rate and had some vacation time. I would go down with a 3.4L DohC but be rolling back across the border with the same vehicle plus a couple of cylinders.

What is it with that excuse for a V8? The thing gets half the gas mileage of the 3.4, and runs slower, this is documented by numerous quarter mile runs.

So don't get me wrong, but you would be spending $6000 for a complete engine swap, just to get a motor whose redline is at 5,000rpm, is noticably slower than the 3.4 stock, and gets less than half the MPG. So what is the point?
