gp90se
Ive always done it from the top, disconnect the battery (the starter solinoid is right there), the bottom bolt of the ICM is a BITCH and 1/2 to get out, so dont bother putting it back in. good luck. 92gtpblue
so i should be able to install the coils once i remove the battery? and i install them from the top not bottom?
Crimson Fury Z
no battery removal needed. just disconnect the neg terminal. they are at a slant facing downwards. i was able to get the battery side and middle pack out via the top, but the one by the ecm is a pain. i got the top bolt from the top, then went from the bottom to get the next bolt. that car lift will help! i had a jack and the floor to lay on. if you havent already, might as well replace the icm while you are at it. RenegadeZ
That was the very first thing I ever changed on my car, "coil packs" car ran like shit till they were changed, just had to make sure I didnt bend the "prongs".... pretty easy tho. 8)
1990lumina
You should relocate them while your at it....or just the 3.4 already have the coilpacks in a good spot. I have that picture of Slick's coilpacks in his Z in my mind and I seem to remmeber him relocating them??
92gtpblue
ok well i have a problem..the car doesnt run so i have to push it..towards the back of the polebarn to get it to the car lift..well theres a hill and i wouldnt be able to push that big heavy ass car up it..so im some what stuck with the floor jack/car stands...so i jacked it up and was looking trying to see how to get to the coil packs...ok its almost impossible to even reach them or see them, the radiator is right there with all its hoses blocking my way..so then i tried to see if i could do it from the top and i couldnt see them at all i could feel them but that was it (their right under the exhaust pipe) i dont get what you guys are trying to tell me, DO NOT REMOVE BATTERY?, whats this starter solinoid look like and this icm? pictures plz? id like to get these coils in this weekend.. topless94style
Your starter solinoid is mounted to the starter, its where the wires go from the ignition and the battery so when you turn your key power is put to the solinoid and the starter starts your car. If you dont disconnect your batter, you could touch two of the terminals on the starter with a wrench or another metal tool and scare the shit out of yourself by turning the engine over. Could do more than scare the shit out of you too.... Â Â Just remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Â The ICM, i believe is underneath the coils? Im not sure I have never changed it, but its down there with the coils. Its another problem area that can arrise with these motors. Â You probably dont have to move much of anything to remove the coils, its just going to be a pain in the ass in you will be bent in some wierd positions, but it can be done. Â Go with the advice above, get the old ones out, and relocate the new ones to a better more accessible position. Maybe slick can chime in and show you a picture of his. Crimson Fury Z
that or look at a pic of the 96-97 3.4s. they are on top, instead of being under. i used the smallest ratchet i had(1/4"?)and and i think a 5.5 or 7 mm socket and i had to feel for the top bolts and get the socket on it. i was able to get my hand through the mess underneath for the bottom 3. maybe removing the heatshield on the exhaust will give you more room. the coils connect to the icm, its what you pull them off of, there are 2 or 4 bolts that hold that on. Crimson Fury Z
(you just got owned!) . i didn't either, it would probably make it easier, maybe, if it isn't a pain to remove the shield.
