Grand Moff Joseph
I have a friend with a 97 MC with the 3.4 DOHC. He reports the following: His car had a very irratic idle for the last few weeks. Dealer replaced fuel pump and intake manifold gasket, and idle seems to have smoothed out. However, when coming to a stop, car dies on a fairly regular basis. wner pulled a vacuum line for the air intake, but to little/no effect. Also, while engine temp does not read overly hot, smoke is coming from exhaust. It smells a little like burnt oil, but we are not aware of any oil leaks or bad exhaust components. The dealer reported that the timing chain is very worn/loose, and needs to be replaced. (NOTE: Car has 99K on it w/original timing chain) Would a loose chain be the source of these problems, or is the dealer jacking us around? Or, could there be other parts to investigate as possible culprits? Thanx!

DOHCRagtopguy
Possibly a bad Idle Air Control Valve? My Olds had a period when it stalled whenever it wanted, I replaced the IAC and it was fine foreverafter.
GP1138
Um, are you sure he didn't mean timing belt? Timing chains aren't usually a huge problem with these engines... And yes, I'd assume that a worn timing belt could definitely be a source of a problem like that.
