3.1T with a side of 284

I believe Lukez34 has a turbo 3.1 connected to a getrag 284. Whether I have the right guy or not im not sure. Anyway I found a car with a 284 in it in a junkyard, but the engine was gone. But since manual w-bodies are rare in new jersey I want to see if i can still capitalize off of finding this car.

So will a 3.1 bolt up to a 284?

And if anyone has this combination how do they like it?

It's probably not the best trans to go with a stock 3.1L as it is geared for the 3.4 TDC power band. Not that a 5-speed would be a bad thing but you'd be much happier with a 282. If the trans is good you may still be able to capitalize off it by selling it.

if you want a suggestion...get all the parts you need sell the 284 and get a 282. i might have a couple 282's soon......the other reason you dont want that trans is that the clutch costs a bit. i got a stock 3.1 one for $30 on ebay new......the 284 one goes for well over 300.

LukeZ34 has a 282 connected to his Turbo 3.1 (vin V). Skalor however has a 284 connected to his. (the only one that exists IIRC) The 284 can handle the power of the turbo engine better, and its closer geared. I think for an N/A 3.1 you'd want a 282 because its lighter and the gearing is more suitable for it. However, I am not sure if you are talking about the Turbo 3.1 or N/A 3.1 because you said 3.1T, which could mean 3.1 vin T, or 3.1 Turbo...not quite sure. However, either way it will bolt up fine.

Yea, it's Skalor that has the 284 mated to his 3.1T.

Though speaking from experience the 282 in my car is holding up just fine. It wasn't/isn't always driven nicely either by both Kenny and myself.

I have the 284 and I don't know if I would choose the 284 if given the choice again. I got my whole 5 speed setup very cheap from Harry's in Hazleton, PA. I'm glad for the 284s strength but I'm not happy with the fact that my 2nd gear syncro is kinda notchy and 284s are not rebuildable. 284s also have expensive clutches($350+) if you want a heavier duty one and my stock 284 clutch is already starting to slip a little if I beat on it too much. Now, I don't think I've heard of anyone really breaking 284s like people break 282s, mostly the differential blowing. It's hard to say though as there are far less 284s out there compared to 282s.
