GnatGoSplat
According to my parts catalog, 88 and 89 Int'l should have the same rack. They both felt the same... the 89 felt stiffer, but turned out that was due to stiff strut bearings. When I swapped in my 96 Z34 front knuckles and put the 89 ones in the 88, it became as stiff as the 89 was. You sure his TGP didn't have the rack replaced at some time? From everything I've found, the TGP racks are no longer available with the standard FE3 rack being the acceptable replacement.
Brian P
well the only noticeable difference was the amount of turns to go from lock to lock. The TGP was 2.25 and my '89 was 2.5. But the car also felt like it couldn't turn in as small of a circle as my '89 did. Just seemed like GM made the turning radius slightly larger so the bigger tires won't rub the inner fender, but I don't know for sure. I have a rack in my basement from a TGP waiting for me. I'm itching to do it soon. Maybe right after the engine goes in
mfewtrail
Seems like the TGP rack discussion comes up every few months or so. I posted this a while back in a similar thread for what it's worth. "It's also has a 14.0:1 ratio rack, the normal racks of the TGP era(89-90) were 15.7:1 ratio(this info came from a TGP brochure)." EDIT: The 15.7:1 ratio was listed for 1990 LE's and STE's....both were listed to have the same ratio, but the STE had "Sport-Effort" steering and the lock-to-lock turns and turning radius on them differ a bit.
