93cuttysupreme Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 Hey guys, I'm Brian, Kevins (93CutlassSupreme) brother. He moved on and his car got passed on to me. I met a few of you at a meet a kensnition metro park. If you don't rember, the cutty had the red bow tie on the rear window, witch i happly took off. I would like to add i am not as pickey and i am happy to have a car. The bad news. Going down the road this asshole slams on the breaks, so i have to also. all of a sudden, my foots on the floor and a crap load of white smoke comes from the back. I drive home with NO breaks what so ever, and pull into the driveway and get a jack. The mecaniac that fixed the air cross threded a lug nut and we break the stud getting it off. We take the wheel off and find out its a blown caliper. So the questions i have are 1. How much of a bitch is it to replace the rear calipers? 2. if i take it to a mecaniac, about how much is it goint to be for 2 calipers, and the stud? 3. last, can you just replace one rear stud, or do you need a whole new hub? I know for a front you can just replace one from experence. Thanks for the help. p.s. It's a 93 cutlass supreme SL, with ABS if that matters. Quote
jeremy Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 the cutty had the red bow tie on the rear window, witch i happly took off. glad to hear it came of ....replacing rear calipers isn't very difficult at all, you should be able to do yourself. If you take it to a mechanic you will probably spend at least a couple hundred bucks. PS - Welcome to the board and I moved this to the "brakes" section Quote
93cuttysupreme Posted June 25, 2005 Author Report Posted June 25, 2005 Ahh yes, I think I met you jeremy, and slick94prix also. thats all I rember. Thanks for moving it. That sticker just did not want to come off, I used like 4 razor blades, 2 cans of lighter fluid and about an hour! Quote
GP1138 Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 A W-Body legacy! Are the brakes really that bad?? Quote
White93z34 Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 i drove your car once i never thought the brakes were that bad myself.... so to answer your question, its not too bad a job, i think i've done it 3-5 times now :x Quote

93cuttysupreme Posted June 25, 2005 Author Report Posted June 25, 2005 Pulled the wheel off again and found another poblem. http://edit.imagestation.com/pixami/ImageServer.psp?Cmd=DoOperation&ID=VECL41BC73CH&Operation=rotateCW&Args=&width=365&height=365&Pad=ffffff&tm=1119719360770 Im guessing thats not the spot that shot break fluid all over the place. Quote
5speedz34 Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 Why don't you ask Kevin to help you out? Quote
pwmin Posted June 25, 2005 Report Posted June 25, 2005 replace all the studs while youre at itl Quote
93cuttysupreme Posted June 25, 2005 Author Report Posted June 25, 2005 Why don't you ask Kevin to help you out? He moved out and we really don't communicate anymore. I would rather just do it with my dad or something anyways. Quote
93cuttysupreme Posted June 27, 2005 Author Report Posted June 27, 2005 Me and my dad fixed it today. The hardest part was the damn stud. We broke 2 C-clamps. 1 hammer, and almost my thumb. Total time was about 4 hours, with one at murries trying to figgure out the difference between a 40 dollar caliper and a 80 dollar one. Turns out the 80 dollar one includes the 2 mounting bolts. 40 dollar bolts? Yeah right! We tried bleading the breaks but never really got a steady streme of fluid out of the bolt, so we test drove slowly around the block. It stoped like i never has before. Awsome power. Should I be worried about not having a steady streme? Quote
1990lumina Posted June 27, 2005 Report Posted June 27, 2005 I think you will want to have a steady stream...if any air gets trapped in the system you could lose some power, (and the pedal will go closer to the floor) but should still have brakes. Quote
93cuttysupreme Posted June 27, 2005 Author Report Posted June 27, 2005 Thats the thing that confused my, It stopped better that it ever did. Quote
93cuttysupreme Posted June 28, 2005 Author Report Posted June 28, 2005 I was talkinf to my negibor who is a mecanic, and he sad wth ABS, there is a certen sequence you are suppose to bleed the breaks. Is this correct or no? What is that seqence? Quote
