montecarloz
95 Montecarlo Z34. I replaced the timing belt, pulleys and intake gaskets about a month and a half ago. Didn't check the belt for about a month, when I did I found some of the black "hair" and small black pimples of rubber on the smooth side of the belt. The front edge of the belt had very slight wear and had very slight cupping across the width of it. The only thing I could think of was it was too loose or too tight and the only thing I hadn't replaced was the actuator. Thinking maybe this was the problem, I got a new one along with a new Gatorback belt (the last one from Chevy was a Dayco). I read to put 12-15 ft lbs of torque on the belt then turn the engine 3 times to seat it, which I did. It seemed too tight so I took the actuator off and then on again and only took up the slack in the belt and turned it one time. The belt seems really tight. I started the car without the timing cover to watch the belt, it seems fine now but I noticed some very small black pieces of what I guess is rubber here and there, I'm assuming it's from the belt, not sure if this is normal until it wears in. My questions are: 1. Could a bad actuator cause the problem I had. 2. How tight should the belt be, should you load it with 12-15 ft lbs? 3. Will the new belt shed a little until it wears in? Thanks in advance for any help.
