GP1138
i was wondering what i can do to my 2.8 to make it faster and what is the fastest 2.8 1/4 mile time out ther With the 2.8, you'd almost need forced induction to make it any kind of fast. I'd be more interested in getting the best MPG out of it.
EurosportZ34
on the other hand...the 2.8's biggest upgrade is calledl the 3.
Justin
I think the 2.8's biggest upgrade is a 5 speed, I can take on 3100 cars no problem with my 175000 mile 2.8 with a warm air intake and no cat.
z34_nut
the biggest upgrade is to ditch it and get a bigger engine. prolly cheaper too.
slick
I would suggest a 3400, but your car is an '89, which IIRC, you would have to swap the subframe.
THe_DeTAiL3R
As for stock 1/4 mile times (with automatic) very high 17s. Best I pulled with my 1988 GP was 17.999, out of 40 runs or so.. lol I agree the best thing to do would be to drop in a bigger engine. Screw the 3.1, you're just gonna for about a week before you want more power. I was happy with my 3100 for a little while in my 1995 GP but that little bit of power got bored soon too. Go for the 3400 and if you can put a 5-speed on it. With that combo you should drop off over 2 seconds on the 1/4 mile time of a 2.8. digitaloutsider
I've got a solution: Don't bother.
fastbird232
Hell, I went out of my way to buy my 2.8 SE for my college commuting. Smallest motor I could find and still have a GP. Mileage still blows (but that might have to do with the e-brake being frozen shut). In short: you don't buy a 2.8 for the upgradability. You buy it because it's small. If you want power, buy a GTP. dbtk2
I would've tried to find a 3100 GP as it would've got better mileage than a 2.8... Shawn
THe_DeTAiL3R
I would've tried to find a 3100 GP as it would've got better mileage than a 2.8... Shawn Yup... my 95 got about an extra 100km per tank over my 88' 2.8 did... bigger engine with more power and more fuel efficient. 2.8s SUCK for gas mileage! I would imagine the 3400 is very close to the 3100.
fastbird232
Can't beat the $75 selling price, though...
Justin
2.8s SUCK for gas mileage! You guys are nuts, man. My 2.8 CS will smoke my parent's 3.1 Lumina and 3800 Impala for mileage. If a 2.8 isn't getting good mileage, at least 25 avg and 30+ on the highway, then you have some issues.

Justin
It is a 5 speed, but my old 4 speed auto got almost the same mileage. There is no reason at all that a 2.8 shouldn't get better fuel economy than a 3.1. Everything is virtually identical except the stroke. THe_DeTAiL3R
I agree it really shouldn't be noticable between a 2.8 and 3.1, however I noticed a big difference going up to my 3100 which is simply more efficient.
Brian P
I never saw more than 300 miles to a tank of mixed city/HWY until I got my '95. Previously I've owned a 3.1 car and 2.8 car all with the 4 speed auto. However I will say the 2.8 got better eceonomy than the '90 3.
gp90se
I just took my boat of a regal (3.1) 330 miles mostly highway needing an oilchange and got 30mpg doin between 75-80 the entire trip. My GP before the fire (again, 3.1) would get 35mpg highway if i ran in at 70.
fastbird232
I was thinking of a propane injection system for my 2.8. take a regular torch/lantern canister and run a line through the firewall and into the EGR hole on the air intake hose. Hell, if it blows up (WHEN it blows up), no big deal, just a 2.8, right?
