LuminaMan93
Last night after my night class, I get im my car and start it up, the first thing that I notice is the dash lights are dimmer than usual. I figure its not that big a deal so I start my 35 min drive home. While I'm on 202 the volt light comes on, I figure i'll get it checked out on friday when I have my alignment done. So I'm going along at 65mph and I look down at the speedo and it is dropping down to 60 then goin back to 65, then it dropped down to 35 and the engine would just rev real high. As I was pulling over the engine went back to normal. Then all my lights went out, my hazards wouldn't come on, nothing, but the car was still running. While I was pulled over I turned the headlight off then back on, after a minute everything lit back up bright as normal. Except the parking brake light was light up, but the brake wasn't on, I barely use it. She ran fine the rest of the way home except when I came to a stop light for awhile, the engine would rev high and the car would start to lurch forward. I got it home then shut it off and started it up again and it started fine. I poped the hood and there is a whining noise coming from the altenator, so i'm thinking thats it, any other ideas? But if it was the altenator, would that cause the speedo to jump like that and the engine to rev? Oh. yea its a 93 Lumina with the 3.1. I don't know how many miles are on the altenator, I haven't replaced it since I got the car with 76,000. Now the car has 120,000. Also it had thunderstormed while I was in class, it rained hard for a good hour and a half, maybe some sensor or something got wet, I don't know. Any ideas? luzmina
Same happen to me 8 years ago but my engine die too, after I pull over, car started fine until today, I think my alternator have some diode that short and after the high current blows the diode wiring, everything return to normal, days later I have to replace the alternator. White93z34
check the positive cable near the battery, that likes to come loose and cause all sorta of odd problems
jdcutty
I would just take it to the nearest Autozone ot Advanced Auto and have them test the battery and alt. It's free anyway so you have nothing to lose.
jeremy
I would check the Aux terminal like Chris said....and if that was tight then take it to get the batt/alternator checked.... be sure to report back to us letting us know what the problem was
LuminaMan93
I checked the Aux terminal and that was fine. I'm going to test the battery and altenator this weekend. Now it starts fine and no warning lights come on, but it idles like crap and wants to stall out. The throttle response is off also. Maybe there is a sensor or something that is bad. Any ideas on that?
RenegadeZ
My car ran like that about a 1 1/2 ago, I just had to do an "Idle relearn".... hit tha search, & try that....
LuminaMan93
I cleaned the IAC and did an idle relearn. Then I took it for a test drive and it died, and wouldn't start. So it's getting a new battery and an altenator. Then we'll see if that solves it.
1990lumina
When my alternator died my signal lights started to act wierd, they would stay on solid, no blinking, also my speedo did what yours did...and the volts light came on, 5 secs later she was dead...luckily I was fairly close to home. But yeah, the high revving of the motor and lurching was properly because it needed an idle relearn since the ecm may have lost power....I duno Hopefulyl the new battery and alternator solves your problem:D
RenegadeZ
I just cleaned my intake yesterday & I have to do the "relearn" again. Thinking about it, everytime I clean it I have to do the "relearn".
