Random NO CRANK problem? Heat related?

For some reason, only in the summer and hot, humid months(could just be coincidence I guess), my 89 Supreme will sometimes just not crank at all for the first few tries. I turn the key, and nothing. Again, nothing. Again and it starts. Sometimes it take like 20 times, sometimes as little as twice or three times. It's like the starter isn't even trying to start, or something isn't getting or sending the signal to turn over. It only seems to do it after I shut the car off and leave it parked for about 10-20 minutes. For example, it never does it in the morning, or after sitting for a long time. And it never seems to do it if I am only running in a store for a few seconds and coming right back out.

What could this be?

THANKS!:)

Sounds like your starter is getting "heat soaked." It's actually a common occurrance on V8's that have headers running near the starter.

My guess would be that your underhood temperatures are a bit higher than normal. Maybe try to see if you inadvertently blocked off some of the airflow through the engine compartment. If all's well, JCWhitney sells a "starter heat shield" blanket that wraps around the starter to insulate it from the extreme underhood heat...

Hmmm. You could have a bad solenoid, signal feed, or crank power.

When this happens....you need to check the purple signal wire that runs to the starter with a test light. If it lights while the switch is at crank AND you have voltage coming in on the large cable, you need a new starter.

If you don't have voltage at the purple....look towards the ignition switch side of things.

If you don't have voltage on the large cable....check connections and you might have to replace the starter.

Thats the only way to be 100% sure. But, you have to have it actting up and be in the position to test it at the same time, this can be difficult to do.

My *guess* is the same as Disco Stew's....the solenoid isn't liking heat.
