crossovers location

one hot GTP

Recommended Posts

The stock rear Delco 6X9's in the early W-Bodies (or any non-Cadillac GM for that matter) never had crossovers. Even if you had a Regal or Cutlass with the "Concert Sound" speakers in the front (with separate midwoofers and tweeters,) they didn't even have crossovers. They had "choke coils" attached to the positive lead of the tweeter.

I have no idea if the Bose systems actually had crossovers or not, so can't help you there. If you're talking about a mid-90's Grand Prix, then no, the rear speakers don't have crossovers (from the factory anyway...)

my GTP has the "premium sound system", and there are four wires going to each of the speakers, any ideas of location of crossovers or what the "extra" wires are?

Well color me shocked! I would try looking underneath the carpet of the rear "package tray" (I'm stealing this photo from another thread) :

If they were anywhere, my guess would be either there or inside the trunk up underneath the rear deck...

ummm..yeah. there won't be any crossovers back there. your rear speakers are dual voice coil, which would mean four wires going to each speaker. the factory amp would handle any crossover duty.

what are you trying to do? maybe i can help

im trying to put in some infinity kappa 6x9's

any help would be appreciated

 i have kappa 6x9's in my trunk...i just mounted the crossovers to the back of the rear seats (in the trunk area)...of course, i don't have passthrough rear seats (maybe you do?)...

and disco, that pic looks like my cutlass for some reason

if they are dual voice coil, you could hook them directly up to the existing wires without the crossover.

do you have the system with dvc rear speakers?

i guess you could say that...its got plugs on one side for the tweeters, and the other side of the speaker for the woofer...

ok. and your crossovers, i'm assuming, have one input.....so how did you go about hooking up your crossovers toyour factory harness? or did you run new wires from an aftermarket head unit?

ah. well, one hot gtp, the wiring for your system and terryk2003's will be the same. so his sounds like a good approach. if you hook your crossovers into one set of wires or the other, you'll be splitting a split signal

yeah. so you'll need to get the connectors mentioned above. maybe you could run new wires from the head unit back, bypassing the factory amp. i'd have to check into it, though

im trying to not split a split signal, i want to get rid of the factory crossover or whatever

well, yours is different because mine didnt have premium sound from the factory...noowwww i understand why you're trying to find the factory x-over...

i'm telling you that you're not going to find crossovers. the factory amp provides the high and low pass signals through the four wires that go to each of the rear speakers. most likely you will have to run new wires from the head unit back to the rear speakers and bypass the amp completely

behind the trim piece around the radio and instrument cluster and junk. if you take off the piece underneath the steering column, you will see two gray tabs sticking through the bottom of the dash. that's it
