oil changing question

I am doing an oil change on my Monte myself this time around. Last time I did one I had my buddy, who works at Speedee Oil Change, drain it and refill it and change the filter at his work. It was much easier for him to do so. I brought my own filter and oil instead of using whatever they have there, when his boss asked me to hand him the oil filter he mentioned that the manual doesn't list the correct filter, it will work, but the filter that should be used on the 3.4 is longer than the stock one (pretty short stumpy one). Is this true and what would be the benefit or drawbacl of using a "longer" filter? Also if true what is the part # to pick up at Autozone, and if anyone feels like recommending a good synthetic blend 5w30 I wouldn't mind. Thanks guys.

I had the same thing when I did my first oil change in my lumina. For the first 10 years of its life, the chevy dealership did the oil changes. The used the oil filter for the z34. It has the same threads but is longer. When I went to change it, I realized it was a different filter. I called around and every dealer gave me the part number off the filter that was being used and all the autoparts stores gave me the shorter filter number. I even went on K&N and Fram's sites and they listed the shorter filter so that is what I used. I don't think a shorter or longer filter matters, just that the threads are the same. Hey look at it this way more filter more filtration.

As for oil, MOBIL 1 all the way...

I would put mobil 1 in it if it was run on full synthetic since its was taken of the assembly line, seeing as none of the past owners did, I see no point in wasting money to put full synthetic in it has never seen anything but regular oil. I heard that using full synthetic when the car has never been run on full synthetic offers no advantages, true?

PS. what is the part number for the longer oil filter?

I use the longer 3980 in nearly any engine I come across. I have one in my 3.1, 3400, 3800, and I put one on my friend's '97 L67.

?

according to some really reliable websites and people I have spoken to, they say this a myth. Yes it would have been better from the beginning BUT it is sorta like a 60year old man that smokes. He could smoke till he dies or quit now an live 5-10 years longer. Just an anology, not downing smoker. But don't want to turn this into synthetic or mineral based oil threads.

So I guess using the PF-47 or the PF-52 is fine. I am running inot the same thing with my gf camaro (3800). She also takes the 47 but if I go buy a lot of 12 filters from ebay, I am going to change her to the 52 also. Whatcha think?

I bet you got a 1040 didn't ya? 1036 is the PF-52 equivalent. Just ask for a filter for a 2000 4.3L Blazer if they ask for the vehicle. (or tell them the # lol)

i totally forget the PN. it's a NAPA gold filter though.
1040 is the pf47. So if it's small that would be it lol. I got quite a few of each left since I stocked up at napa's last sale.

So general consensus is, the longer filter (AC Delco PF-52 or should I go with something other than AC Delco maybe Mobil 1 or K&N if they offer better performance/protection?) with Mobil 1 full synthetic, the money is not really an object, I just need this car to run as long as possible, a new car is not in the near or intermediate future unless I hit the lottery. However does it make sense for me to put expensive oil in there since I have to add between one to two quarts between oil changes anyway?

But don't want to turn this into synthetic or mineral based oil threads.

Why not I always wanted to be a part of one of those...lol.

i would run Mobil-1....unless you have oil leaks that need to be fixed. i run conventional in my SSE (i'm just cheap i guess), but then i use Mobil-1 in my turbo cars.

I think we ALL can agree that M! is the best oil on the market today. Yes it is expensive, but it is worth it. I use it in all four cars listed in my sig. I also use AC Delco filters on all four (even the Ford)....I do work at a GM dealer, so filters are like $1 for me.

I could step up to the $10 M1 or $10 K&N (both made by Champion Labs)....but I don't.

I hate people that use M1 with a Fram filter.

I don't think I have any oil leaks, but I am pretty sure my sparkplugs are shit and I may be burning oil. What would be the signs of that, white smoke out of the exhaust?

does Champion Labs make Motorcraft filters? i always use a Motorcraft FL-1A (Mustang 5.0L filter) on my 2.2 Turbo. that thing is big! they're cheap too and Wal-Mart sells them.

I believe so. Its basically a Puralator filter anyways....which is made by them.

I have ALWAYS been told to use the filter made by the vechiles OEM part division (AC Delco/Motorcraft/Mopar).

I use NAPA filters, made by Wix or something and are suppose to be good. It's funny, the same exact filter is used on the 3100 (and other V6s) as on the 2.2L Sunfire.. lol. I got the bigger one though )no way I'm putting a Sunfire filter on!

The PF47 is pimairly used on all of the FWD GM cars........from the 2.2 to the L67.

The PF52 is mainly used on the 4.3L and 5.7 R.

The PF46 (about the same size as a 47) is used on all of the Gen III V8s (4.8, 5.3, 5.7, 6.0)....Corvette, Camaro, Silverado, Express.

The Ecotec uses an internal filter.

8100s use the PF454, oddly enough.

6.5T Diesels use the PF1218.

Isuzu uses the same Isuzu filter in their entire line up (other than their verison of the Trail Blazer of course).

The Inline 4, 5, and 6 cylinders in S/T trucks use a PF61. For oil capacity in quarts, add one to the number of cylinders.

What's the Mobil 1 part number correspondent to the PF-52/3980, maybe I will go with the Mobil 1 oil filter. Also an off subject question but what spark plugs do you guys recommend for the DOHC 3.4?
