Puggsley456
Hey guys, For the last month and a half My car has been stalling when at a dead stop. It doesnt happen that offten only 5 times in the last 8 weeks. It seems to do it when it is really warm and right before you can feel a vibration or miss happening somewhere. Now when it stalls it starts back up right away and everything is fine. The last time it happened I was on a gravel road, floored it in reverse, stopped hard and before I could put it in drive it stalled. All other times were while at stop lights. It very intermittent and hard to reproduce the problem for diagnossis. I dont know if its connected to that problem but when the car gets warm I see a drop in the cars rpm at idle to arround 500 or the first bar on the tach. I took it in to get scanned and the only code that comes up is the EGR valve witch I had troubles with and is now blocked off. SO, they cleaned the injectors at no charge because it had a bad hesitation when accelerating hard from a dead stop. And has done so since having my intake manifold gaskets replaced 6 months ago at the same place. Also 10 months ago I had my transmission completelly rebuilt, and its still under warranty. I was told by a mechanic that the problem could be the lock up switch on the transmission( 94 cutlass sup. 4speed). What do you guys think? Can they be disconnected on the 4 speed tranys? zoideraserb
it sound likely to me that it is the TCC Solenoid "It controls the Torque Convertor Lockup", My car is a 92 century and my mom's is a 90 Skylark and they both have the "TCC curse" as i am starting to call it, what happens is that it locks-up the Torque Convertor and won't unlock it untill it cools down, and when the brakes are applyed when it is locked it is like fogetting to push in the clutch when you go to stop on a manual. In most cases you have to get it from a transmission shop ar a Dealer, i checked on GmPartsDirect.com for you and they don't have one listed, I have heard Estimates of 350+ dollars to replace it at a good trans shop but i'm just going to get the part and put it on myself "cheaper that way 8) ", it lists it at GmPartsDirect.com for my 92 century 3.3, and the P/N is 08646419 and it was 21.22 shipped it may be the same part number for yours but i dout it since mine is a 90degree V6 and yours id 60degree, but someone on here may be able to tell you the exact P/N. I hope you get it fixed, it can be a PITA to go to stop and get a CLUNK and have to do the imbarrasing push to the side of the road to wait for it to cool down. I can tell you that if you can get it moving around 5MPH then you may be able to get it to go in to drive and go without it dying again. Hope I could Help, ZoidEraserB

94CutlassSLCoupe
change your fuel filter too...both my cutlasses would stall intermittantly if that was somewhat plugged up
Puggsley456
change your fuel filter too...both my cutlasses would stall intermittantly if that was somewhat plugged up It was replaced within the last 6 months. I had it replaced at the same time they replaced my fuel pump. But with that solenoid, My whole tranny is still under warranty so it just a matter of proving my theory to the tranny shop and having them replace it. Puggsley456
I did and the line they gave me is" Its common for this to happen on the 3 speeds but not on the 4 speeds" and "to drive it all weekend and if the problem happens again to bring it back" I think I'm gonna demand that it is done. So thats what you guys figure it is?
zoideraserb
it more than likely that is what the trouble is, from you description at least. If thats not it then at least you will have a new TCC and won't have to worry about that failing. here is a good write-up about it if you wanna read it: http://av.rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A9ibyKD1S51ClRQAn0ODBqMX;_ylu=X3oDMTBwMjNqdWVsBHBndANhdHdfd2ViX3Jlc3VsdARzZWMDc3I-/SIG=11vcjkqf6/EXP=1117691253/**http%3a//www.technicalevolution.com/gm125.htm EDIT: Opps i just noticed that you have a 4spd and not the 3spd so some things in that write-up may not apply to your, Still a good read though. Puggsley456
Well, I went to the trany shop today. They scanned the ecm and it came back as having 2 codes in it. Camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor both tripped codes. Seeing as though I reset the ecm 2 days ago, I dont know if its a reoccuring problem or if the computer didnt propperly reset? Would either of these cause my problems? 88Regal Limited
When that happened to me, my 2.8's block cracked spilling an oil/gas/coolant mix through the fuel system. Not very fun......got a new one though! :?
DaveFromColorado
actually, I HIGHLY doubt it's the TCC, as the converter does NOT go into lockup in reverse, or under 25 mph for that matter, and the problem described doesn't sound like it's a TCC issue. The crank/cam sensors *CAN* cause that problem. if they did a piss-poor job replacing the intake manifold gaskets, that too can cause your intermitant problem, or normal operating temp acceleration issues - this is why they cleaned the injectors, to try to hide the fact they *may* have fucked up the gasket replacement. I'd replace the crank and cam sensors, and see if that clears up your issue, I'm about 99% sure it will. --Dave.
