My 94 cutlass contvertible with the 3.4 DOHC is knockin bad to say the least . Knowing the history of these motors and how big a pain in the ass they are to work on has got me lookin into swappin it with something else. 3.1 T 3.1 V or any of the 3.8s . Ive got all of them but the 3.1V and i got access to it at a local juck yard.(Poor junkman doesnt know what he has).Im partial to the 3800s ,ive seen them in the regals.I havent done any fwd swaps so i dont know what interchanges with what .Lookin to you guys to give me some insite.

I would seriously consider the 3500 and run it off the original 3.4 electronics. According to car-part.com, looks like you can get one ~$600.

The 3500 is 200HP like a 3800 Series III, but is also 60-degrees like a V6 should be and should weigh less thanks to the aluminum heads. It'll also have more power in the higher RPMs so it won't feel terribly different than the 3.4.

That would be a cool swap, but I thought the 3500 are 90* because they are based off the Northstar line?

IIRC: Didn't we decide it wouldn't clear either because of the heads?

No, not that 3500, the 60-degree pushrod 3500 from the Malibu Maxx and G6.

I like the 3500. It has almost as much HP & torque as the 3.4 DOHC, gets better fuel economy, is much smaller, lighter, 60-degrees naturally balanced (no balance shaft), aluminum heads, and being a gen 3 V6, has a pretty nice powerband. I think it's a very nice alternative to the 3800 non-S/C.

Sorry guys the 3500 isnt a option for me due to the fact i have 2 good 92,3800s 1 good sc 3800 (witch is going in my SSE ) 1 99 ,3100. My issue is wiring and ecm .I want to stay away from OBD2 cause my scanner isnt updated that far .I got access to a 92

regal with the 3800 harness ecm and all .Didnt know if i would be running into any snags there our should i just find me a old 3.1 t motor witch looks to have the same wiring harness .So what do ya think guys .

out of those engines i would pick the '99 3100 and run it off of your existing 3.4 DOHC wiring harness & ECM...just use a 3.1 VIN T memcal.

Not possible to do because a 94 3.4 DOHC uses an SFI ECM for which there was no VIN T MEMCAL available. A 3100 might run off a 3.4 DOHC PCM and chip though. For that matter, a 3800 might as well.
