A few questions that im a litte confused about... i am reading the general motors sheet on howto change the timing belt, it says:

steps:

47. Remove timing marks from the camshaft and intermediate sprokets.

48.Position the crankshaft so that No.1 cylinder is at TDC compression stroke. Mark the timing indicator with white paint, or equivalent on the crankshaft balancer and front cover.

49. Position camshafts so taht flat spots are facing upward.

50. install GM tool (hold down tool)

51-62 sproket replace ment (i understand it) and belt installation

63. Remove Hold down tool from rear bank (righthand) camshaft carrier.

64. Rotate the crankshaft 360(1 turn) in the clockwise direction, aligning the refrence marks previously placed on the crankshaft sproket and front cover. Ensure both the rear bank camshaft flat spots are facing down.

65. Remove hold down tool from front bank camshaft carrier.

67. Rotate the crankshaft 720(2 turns) clockwise, aligning the refrence marks previously placed on the crankshaft sprocket and front cover. Ensure both camshaft flat spots for on bank are facing up, while both camshaft flat spots for the opposite bank are facing down.

Q's:

1. How do you set 1 cylinder to TDC? whats the easiest way to tell?

2.Also, the belt is on when im rotating the crank, are the cam sprockets' bolts supposed to be finger tight so the sprockets can spin, because if i put the cam hold down tool on, wont that prevent it from spining?
