topless94style Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 Right now, the engine is in the car and the car is in the driveway at home!! Im excited about that as it has been 30miles away in a shop stored since november. I need a few little parts here and there to get this thing going. I will get pictures up tomorrow of my progress. I got the IC mounted with the piping into the engine bay. One of the P&P heads needs to be taken to a machine shop to have a valve guide replaced. Once that is done, I can re install the valves and put the heads on the car. I had the Ypipe built already, but i misjudged the position of the turbo. So I had to extend it a bit. I did part of that today, but im bad at fabbing the correct turns for the pipe, for some reason I cannot picture it. My gf can actually figure that part out better than me  . She basically designed the IC piping. Once I get the Ypipe finished, which should be tomorrow, I will install the radiator and some other parts and start on the down pipe. The head will be going into the machine shop tomorrow, so hopefully I can get it back by friday. Once that is all done, I need to buy the piping for the wastegate and rig that sucker up, do the piping to the intake manifold and start the car!!! Now that the car is home it will be easier to take pictures and show my progress. I also polished the valves on the heads ill take pictures too, they look really good. I have one question, my pistons are horribly dirty. They were this way when I pulled the original heads off, what would be a good way to clean them up and get some of that shit out of there? Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 i very carefully shaved the gunk stuck on my piston tops off with a single edged razor blade. just gotta be really careful and not nick the piston and do it with the piston at TDC (doh). those were 3.1 MPFI pistons though, it might be harder to do with LQ1 pistons if they have valve reliefs. other than that i also used some Brakleen, a small soft brush, and new clean rags while making sure none of the gunk fell down around the cylinder wall/ring area. turned out pretty good IMO. sounds nice! i'm looking forward to seeing pics Quote
5speedz34 Posted May 25, 2005 Report Posted May 25, 2005 Yeah, just use carb cleaner or something to clean the pistons. Good luck when do you think you'll have it done? Quote

Ha ya, I just needed to get the pipes onto the car so i could place the turbo properly and re fit the Ypipe. I will be taking them off again too so i can add the clamps to the silicon connecters behind the fender. While I do that, they will get more coats of paint. As you can see, they got a tad scratched up from me trying to install them. Quote

topless94style Posted June 2, 2005 Author Report Posted June 2, 2005 Update: I got the heads put together and put on the car. My buddy's sawzall broke while cutting some random things in my car............... so the Ypipe and downpipe are going to be set back til i can buy a new one. He got store credit and bought himself a nice drill so. Heads are on, pistons are clean and its that much closer to being done. Got the radiator in, and most of the A/C stuff removed(random stuff being cut mentioned above). Here is a pic of the heads: More pics found here: http://community.webshots.com/album/353781432qJKvbz Quote

topless94style Posted June 11, 2005 Author Report Posted June 11, 2005 A little update: I was hoping to have it done by this weekend, but it wont happen. I need to make a trip to the junkyard and pick up a few things which will have to wait til monday probably. I also gotta buy a sawzall as the one I was using no longer works. The downpipe is half done but need the saw to continue. I am now designing my own custom fuel system for when I get the car up and running, and a water/alcohol injection system. The water injection will most likely go on when I get the car running for the first time, and the fuel system at a later time. Quote
topless94style Posted July 22, 2005 Author Report Posted July 22, 2005 any updates? Down pipe is done, i gotta make a little mod to the piping to get it to fit between the rear cams and the brake booster. I went and got a new serp belt tensioner from the yard, turned out it doesnt work. I ordered some exhaust wrap should be coming soon, other than that its almost ready!!! Sorry, im working 60+hrs a week now to catch up on bills, so the car has been a small priority, plus my grandma and grandpa are close to the end and its been a ruff summer over all. Let me get some pics here in a couple days show ya anything thats been done. Quote
5speedz34 Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 How do you plan on getting the car (drivibility wise) to run right? I mean with all the air coming into the engine, I wouldn't be suprised if the injectors won't keep up. I know you said you are designing your own fuel rail. I'm just curious though. Quote
sonyman87 Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 READ THIS Toplessstyle94 I love to see the work your doing to your car is really sweet! but befor you even consider getting on the gas with that thing. DO some transmission work!!! My trany wants to fail with 240crank HP or more? Lookinto transmission coolers! and watch it closely. a turbo 3.4dohc is going to murder the stock transmission. Quote

DO some transmission work!!! My trany wants to fail with 240crank HP or more? Lookinto transmission coolers! and watch it closely. a turbo 3.4dohc is going to murder the stock transmission. HAHA ya...... about that. Before I ran out of money, i was going to recondition the bottom end and do some work to the tranny while it was all out of the car, but i ran out of money!! Thats why this damn thing decided to take 4+ months longer than i thought to finish. Im really close now so ill just have to deal with the tranny when the time comes. I got this second job over the summer and its really helping me catch up on my bills and it feels good to pull my ass out of debt. I just got into the UofM and have to worry about that as my next big bill. I have plans already for this winter to start saving for a new transmission. As for the fuel, I have an 8:1 FMU right now and i set up the system sorta like aaron did on his Z. After reading the thread about the fuel lines popping off, ill be redesigning that, dont know how or with what yet though. I would like to know how Tim did the fuel system on his turbo 3.4 though too. Once I get the car up and running ill worry about the fuel pump and injectors. They are on top of the list of things to do when the car is running lol. I think at max boost with the FMU the injectors will be around 90% duty cycle so ill see how that goes. Besides saving for the transmission this winter, ill be collecting parts to tap into that computer and see what I can do in there tuning wise. Speaking of the fuel system, I think i remember reading in that thread about aarons old Z that you can get quick disconnects and put them onto your own fuel lines? If that is so where can i get these babies. Quote
