hosser
Well the dreaded has come, after just rolling my 95 3.4 over 140k miles my belt (appears to have) went out on me. Rolling down the road at 65 and absolutely no power. I manage to coast into a gas station and tried to start it for a while. It rolled over real quick so i figured it was the belt because its never been changed. i get the car towed home and take off the covers, sure enough the belt is about half the size its suppose to be and its all frayed; and also i see teeth just laying there. I am figuring that the teether were torn off the timing belt although its still intact, but my noobie question is: Just buy looking at it is there any way to tell it was infact the timing belt and not the chain that broke? Psych0matt
unless they both went out at the exact same time, but I don't see how the chain would have went out also. My guess is it's just the belt.
hosser
right, the belt isnt snapped though, this i take it doesnt matter? And another noob question (sorry ive got to learn somehow) Is it a must to have the cam hold down tools to time it correctly again? Say i want to just use the marks that already exist on the cam, how do i use them and which way do they face? Thanks for putting up with me ;-P
chadz34
No you need a new belt no matter what. As for the cam question, you have to use the same marks that are on them, they should be easy to find. They are done in yellow paint pen. Hold them in that position and tighten your timing belt. Im pretty sure if you don't know how to learn your idle again you can just drive it around the block and it will learn it. Hope that helps man. 8)
hosser
yeah i know how to learn the idle, i have to throw it in park after i disconnect the battery cable and hold my foot on the brake and etc.. etc.. i just dont know where the marks need to go, when the belts teeth were ground off the marks arent inline with each other, when i put the belt back on, were do the marks need to be facing? chadz34
They have to be facing forward because thats the direction the belt moves the cams.
Psych0matt
not necessarily. on mine, the back ones were facing apart (not taught) and the fronts were facing each other (taught). I know I got it right because I spent hours reading through threads on here :-) different years may be different i suppose, but mine had the yellow marks, lined those up like I said and has been great since. EDIT: Here's the thread I spent lots of time on http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22369&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=
SilverZ
I just changed mine not to long ago but mine were orange marks and a white mark on the crank. the crank went down and slightly to the right because when you put the tensioner on it straightens it out at the bottom but the top two in the back turned until the two marks made a little line. And then I did the same with the fronts. But I just used vicegrips to hold the top four tight...hope it helps. mine is a 94 lumina z34 so i don't know if its different but here ya go... chadz34
The marks might depend on the year.
