no1kicker Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I've been thinking about painting my calipers. Just really never got around to it. Today at advance auto I picked up a caliper painting kit for $15. It's the brush on kit. They only had red, yellow, and silver, so I got the red, and could always return it. Before I had wanted to use blue. I saw a GXP last summer that was white with red calipers and it looked good. What do you guys think? Red, blue, or don't paint them. pic: http://img201.echo.cx/img201/4210/sideapril10dj.jpg Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 are you using the duplicolor kit? my uncle used that and he said if you dont get the calipers very very clean, the paint will fish eye and youll be there for four days trying to get it perfect. Personally, I think it looks great the way it is but if I had to choose a color, I think Id go with red Quote
terryk2003 Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 i painted mine black with that kit you're talkin about...they looked nice for a while, but eventually they dulled out and started rusting...so, i repainted em to match my car color... anywayz, i think i'd go with red...or leave em alone... digitaloutsider Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I bought 1500* high-temp Duplicolor spray paint and called it a day. It looks damn good. Quote
runt Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I bought 1500* high-temp Duplicolor spray paint and called it a day. It looks damn good. Ahh yes...that would be next on my list.... anyway, I'd say go red, it'd look good! Quote
89GPSE Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I used the same kit from advance. works good. Quote
supreme_style21 Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I'd return it and get the high-temp paint thats 10 bucks cheaper. The red, I dunno about.... Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 wrong section = moved c'mon guys! Quote
J Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 that kit is much better than a spray on paint, just make sure to clean em first with a wire brush and lots of Brake clean. Tape em off and go to town, I did three coats, did one and worked my way around the car three times and i was done. Spray paint gets all over shit, the can is much better. Oh if u want to return that kit i can send you the almost full can i have of the red sittin on my desk right newxt to me, you only use a tiny amount of that can, you'd be suprised Quote
digitaloutsider Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 Spray paint gets all over shit, the can is much better. That's why someone invented masking tape and newspapers. Quote
dbtk2 Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 Spray paint gets all over shit, the can is much better. That's why someone invented masking tape and newspapers. Ditto. I've been meaning to paint the calipers on my STE blue for a while now. Red calipers always look good, but I think on a Maroon car it will look kinda funny, so I'm gonna go with blue. If I ever get different wheels on the Lumina that actually show the brakes at all, then I will probably go with red for those. For a white STE, defiantely go with red, and use the high temp engine paint, not the brake caliper painting kits, its much cheaper and as long as you don't get brake fluid on it it seems to work a LOT better. Bossman429 Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 What an odd coincidence, I just did mine today at work on the Beretta. My appologies for not cleaning my greasy grub prints off of the new parts. The old ones were white, and looked good for a while, I painted them with Rustoleum(?) brush on paint. THIS time I painted the knuckles, and calipers with VHT spray paint, the color is called Aluminum, and I think it looks great. If I had to vote, I'd say silver, or red. Silver would be slightly less flashy/noticable, and would give a clean look. Red would stand out more, and look a little more racey. It's your choice... Quote
90TGP Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I would use blue. I used VHT Caliper paint on my car in red. It's a self-priming high-temp made specifically for calipers. It looks great. I'll try to get pics this weekend. Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 yeah go with aluminum/silver. colored brake parts seem a little ricey to me. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I used VHT engine paint on my calipers, I used red but my car is red so it looks good. For a white car I'd go with silver or blue, red only if your car is black or silver, or has other red on it, IMO. The VHT engine spray paint looks okay but be careful you don't scratch it if you do a quick job like I did (had my brakes done after I painted them and it was all scratched to hell. Can't really seem them that much through the sawblades or crosslace though, so I don't care. If I had bigger 5 spoke Eagles or something I would have done a better job. Quote
no1kicker Posted May 20, 2005 Author Report Posted May 20, 2005 Thanks for the suggestions. I wouldn't paint silver, I would just not paint them at all. I guess I have to play with photoshop cause I'm still undecided. Jay, I might you up on your offer, as long as the paint will seal good enough to ship. Quote
mfewtrail Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 Red or blue wouldn't look bad in my opinion. You can always paint them a standard black or glossy black and that would look good. Quote
J Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 Spray paint gets all over shit, the can is much better. That's why someone invented masking tape and newspapers. so on a windy day your gonna mask the entire side fo your car? Spray paint is just more of a pain in the ass, i was pissed when i got the kit home and realized i grabbed the brush on kit, but trust me it works so much nicer.. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted May 20, 2005 Report Posted May 20, 2005 I used the cheapest engine paint I could get from Wal-mart. It was no trouble at all masking everything with masking tape and newspaper, but then I also sprayed them in a closed garage. It's held up very well, no rust and still glossy as the day I sprayed it. All I did to prep was wire brush them till smooth, then cleaned them with lacquer thinner. Quote

Jay, I might you up on your offer, as long as the paint will seal good enough to ship. let me know, you cam PM me anytime, i also have a bag of the same brushes that come with it, so i'll ship you the paint and a few brushes then send it back, you only pay for shipping, trust me this stuff goes a long way. When using it though, make sure you shake the shit out of it. Later Jay Quote
wally05 Posted May 21, 2005 Report Posted May 21, 2005 funny, I just did my rear ones yesterday (haven't put them on yet, so I thought I'd paint them). I used duplicolor RED high Heat. 3 thin layers, 1 medium. It looks good, I must say, I just have to touch it up a little. Just get the paint and mask everything off. You can do so much with the ten dollars you save. Korey Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted May 22, 2005 Report Posted May 22, 2005 my brother just ordered the Duplicolor kit in silver for one (all?) of his cars. we should be painting them this week...i'll post my opinions on the stuff Quote
