Rabbi
Heres the deal i have a car that has been sitting for about a year without oil in it. I drained the oil out to take the pan off and never got around to doing it. All the intake holes have been plugged, etc. But my main question is, Can leaving an engine sitting for 7-12 months without oil cause problems? I never started or even atempted to start it. im thinking of getting her going again soon, But dont want to mess with it if its a useless cause. White93z34
i'm asumeing the oil pan is damaged? what i'd do: take out all the spark plugs, fill each cyl with oil, then fill the car back up with oil and come back in a day or 2. *2 days later* try hand cranking the engine, if it spins hit the starter, oil should go everywhere, then put the plugs back in and fire it up. 1990lumina
If no mositure got into the engine and caused corrosion, then you should be okay...however, some of the seals may be dried out and whatnot...its worth a try, what do you have to lose other then some time and a few quarts of oil? 1990lumina
Oh ok...I didn't read it correctly - thought the motor, and the rest of the car was sitting for that amount of time...sorry bout that lol - Jeff L.
Rabbi
hmm why would gaskets try out? wouldnt it just be the same as the motor sitting with oil for a year? since it would be all down i nthe pan hmm i dont know if i should even piss with this motor

I had a 2.8 that sat for a good long while, and it didn't leak any oil when it was fired back up. Really, what do you have to lose? If you throw it out, it'll be just the same as if the motor fucks up anyway, might as well try it!
5speedz34
I had a '92 3.4 and it sat for about 10 months. I changed the oil let it run for a few minutes and it was fine same with a 88 2.8. Honestly I wouldn't worry about it.
Rabbi
well i figured it wouldnt hurt it to sit like it has. But i wanted some more opinions before i put a good 10 hours into it to try to get her running.
paulo57509
With letting an engine sit without oil for an extended length of time (7-12 months is really a long time), my concern would be that the oil pump can lose prime.

If you're really worried about that, hold the gas to the floor (clear flood mode) and crank it for about 5-10 seconds.

ShockTherapy
they make a thingy you can put on a drill to spin the oil pump without running the motor, now i can't find the P/N, but it would be a helpful little gadget.

streetdreams
my 2.8 GP sat thru a winter, summer and than winter again before I finally gave her the attention she deserved. and with that old oil in her, she fired right up last month I've put on a couple grand in mileage since than, trouble free till my coolant sensor popped outta the rad this morning. the 2.8 is a solid motor man,run for years if your patient
