Question about stock ECM

1990lumina

Recommended Posts

I have a question about the stock ECM in my Lumina....is it smart enough that it retards the engine to work it less hard when the engine temperature gets to hot - thus producing less power??

I ask because today I still had my winter thermostat in the car and it was actually a fairly hot day today and my temp (on the guage) was at half all the time. The coolong fan(s) would kick in a bit past half, run for about 20secs then shut off...I know it isn't the best thing to be doing to an enigne.

However, I noticed less power being produced as well...I was wondering if the ECM has something to do with it or not...I know our Suburban will start to retard the engine after 227* of something like that...

Thanks

i dunno about the early 90s, but i did read that my 99 will retard the crap out of the timing if it is overheating.

put that other tstat in! :D

A colder engine performs better anyways. Plus with both fans running that is drawing power. Yeah, put the cooler t'stat in, it's an easy job on the 3.1L.

I forget what I put in there for winter....something quite hot but I forget the actual temp...I'll know on Saturday. The problem was the 'ol 3.1 wouldn't warm up worth a shit when it was -40 and whatnot in winter...

Alright, I have a question about thermostats...and I thought I'd ask here instead of wasteing more banddwidth and whatnot...

Question is: Is there a 180* thermostat available for the 3.1?? I ask because I don't want this thing running to hot this summer....and yes, I will probably be driving a little harder the the average person with an old Lumina lol...

Yes or No will be good enough :D

If no, I'll put in my other one that came out in the fall....however it is the original stat, and I don't really want to put it back because, I was thinking last night, and IIRC the stat was broken - it was stuck open which was why the engine wouldn't warm up in the monring in winter...

Anyway, thanks
