Oil Leak?

I'll start out by saying, thank god, this is not for MY car. I've already dealt with this on mine.

Is the oh-so-common 3.4 oil pump o-ring oil leak also a common issue with the 3100? I've got a buddy with a '97 Cutlass Supreme.. 3100 with roughly 110,000 miles. He says its leaking oil. From where, he can't tell. He sent me a bunch of pictures, but I can't quite make anything out. It doesn't appear to be dripping when the car is off. Oil and coolant levels are, so far, okay.

I don't think its just oil leaking. He says when he's driving, he can smell burning oil, but he said something about the engine steaming a few times.. Oil doesn't steam.. coolant does. I'm wondering if the Dexcool isn't leaking through the intake gasket somewhere. Dirtyass dexcool can certainly look like oil once it runs all over the underside of the car. Is there a way to narrow down what the hell it might be? The back side of the engine 'appears' to be dry, from what I can see in whatever pictures I have.

Pick up a pressure tester and put it in the car (or tell your friend to) and that'll tell ya right away if it's the intake (Or another leak)

That Dist. O-Ring gasket is a problem on ALL of the cars - 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, etc...

I'll bet it's a combination of the both. Also - check all the metal coolant lines - ya know how much of a pain in the ass thoes are...

Hope this helps ya!!

Pressure tester? Vacuum I assume? How or where would you use that on the engine? Never pissed around with one of those before.

Heh...

It's a PRESSURE tester - not vacuum. I use it every day at work - you hook it up to your car's rad filler neck - and hand pump until you are at your operating pressure (15-16 psi) and see if it drops - if it drops - ya got a leak and just look for it!

Here is the tool I speak of:

:bash:

It's all good - just pop that on it and watch! And for the O-ring gasket - just get some brake clean and spray it down - and watch the oil trickle!!

If you seriously need the flourecent stuff - you don't have a leak. You are just seeping and it's not worth doing anything until it's worse (unless it's internal) and that flourcent stuff is messy/dirty/nasty.

Just stick w/ the pressure tester! :)

You put it in and check with a black light were the leak is.
