My 1990 International is hard to start cold and killing gas. I can't get my plugs in all the way, it seems like the threads are off. I couldn't even get the old on back in. I need to know what is the fix...I don;t have mucj money so it goes like this.

Hard to start when cold, if I try to drive off cold, cuts off...only when cold

Bad gas mileage...especially in the city

Hesitates a bit

Rough Idle

Loss of Power

What should I do:

Fuel Filter??? which one is best

Air filter is clean

Plugs...read above

Service Engine light On....which sensor do you think

I changed oil but it keeps telling me to change oil...5 qts of 5W-30

I am out of suggestions...I know it's omething small but gas isn't cheap in DC!!!!!!! HEEELP

for the hard start I would replace the fuel pressure regulator if your fuel pump is still good, I'd get those plugs fixed as thats probibly whats causing you all your grief

for the gas mileage clean your egr valve

The oil issue is simple -- just go into the 'oil' page of the DIS, and hold down reset for a minute. The oil reminder will go away.

Fix the plugs definitely. Look at the homepage of this site and follow the instructions to pull whatever codes the ECM is showing. Those might give you a few more hints.

How is the O2 sensor? If it's old it will def. cause a rough idle and poor milage. May not throw a code unless its completely dead.

They're pretty much all the same. I use Purolator (since that's all I can find)

Try some good ol' AC Delco's. Stay away from Bosch

Pull the codes with the instructions in the W-body FAQ's. It's really easy.

You need to change the O2 sensor. I had the same problem in my Z and within 2 bolcks of the test drive, the problems were gone. It should cost about 20 bucks for the O2 sensor. I dont know about gas milage, though.

do the fuel filter first...you probably need one anyway!

My W gets about 21 city and 30 or more on the Highway...which is pretty damn good for a v6 car of any kind!

i think you need to address your problem of the spark plugs not going in all the way. you gotta be looseing compression that way. get some good ACD plugs and get them in all the way without striping your heads.

2.8's are hard on gas

i find that hard to belive, cause many 3.1 owners including myself have gotten great gas milege in the 30's, and the 2.8 is even smaller, pretty much the same motor

I'd say i'm up around 32 MPG for highway (65/70 MPH)

But the city drops to around 15 (Very heavy foot, lots of stop-n-go)

I love my gas mileage in my 3.1...

something is wrong with your guy's 2.8s i get 33.5 mpg highway most of the time.

in the city its not as good because i have to give it quite a bit of gas to get moving and keep from getting rear ended by trucks. :?

My mom's car and my Lumina w/ 3.1 get the best mileage on the highway - however her car is way better in the city then mine could dream of..

Here's a quick run odwn of what all my families cars' get (I dunno if this a fuel economy thread...but it seems to have turned into one)

Listed from best to worst in regards to highway

1999 Acura 3.0 CL - 34 highway, 23 city

1990 Chevrolet Lumina 3.1 - 31 highway, 17 city(heavy foot to get the land yacht moving)

1996 Chevrolet Suburban 6.5TD - 25 highway, 19-20 city

1995 Ford Taurus 3.0 - 24 highway, 16-17 city

1985 Mazda RX-7 2 rotor rotary engine 1.1L w/ 4barrel carb (12a) 19 highway, 14-15 city:D lol...gotta love shittest mileage of them all, plus the added cost of maintaince of the rotary lol

Just dont shove the plugs in there like the previous owner of my late Beretta did. I was driving it to college one day and the plug in the back cylindar head flew out. The threads were fucked, so I had to pull the rear head off, and get a different one from a junk yard and slap it on.

That happened to my old 2.8 in the GP I used to have. I helicoiled it, twice (again after my rush job, which lasted ~5months  ) and it didn't give me problems.
