Impossible?

I got a 1986 FWD Cadillac sitting in my back yard. I don't particularly like it. I was wondering if you guys thought it possible to shove a 4.9 into the engine bay of a 3.4 DohC Cut. Give me your opinions. Anything goes.

Really? I can't find any info on the Horse power for that 4.9.. which I double checked and it's actuallya 4.1 252 v8... wouldn't it be stronger though than the 3.4?

no it won't be stronger the 3.4 dohc the dohc may have timing belt issues and alternator issues but its a faster car. over a 86 4.1 the 4.1 is a sorry motor i wouldn't even mess with swaping it in.

Alternator issues yes... so far i've not had any problems with the timing belt, "knock on wood" . man It's too bad. i don't know what to do with that car. What about the 4.9 is that also a shitty engine?

if you get a 95 or 96 its a little better but still your 3.4 dohc can out run it for the most part. since you have to use the caddy tranny with the 4.9 or else it won't work. its some strange shit about a caddy i don't know why the computer work work with other trannies it just won't. :?

The Cadillac's use a HD version of the 4T60-E.

Honestly both the 4.1 and the 4.9 suck big time. There based of the same block, and they just all around blow.

The only thing they are good for is the V8 sound.

Honestly, it's probably worth it to just replace the alternator on your current engine, rather than trying to make a shitty mid-80's V8 work in it. If you drop the subframe, it's a lot easier, but from what I hear the about the alternator, it just takes more TIME to change than it really is difficult. Learn how to do it, and it becomes much easier if you ever have to do it again. Which you will. GM's alternators suck as it is without it being down back behind the engine.

My dad had a 1986 Caddy FWD Devile with the 4.1. That thing was a DOG! I to convince him not to buy it but he did. I bought the Lumina 3.1 off him for 3000.00 and he put that money and another 3000.00 into that caddy to get it off the lot. While that stupid car was hid I did aprox 3-4000.00 work on the engine for him.

the 4.1 was a sorry pile of shit. 0-100 km/h if I remember right foot to the floor going down a hill with a tail wind in near 15+ seconds.

didn't some kid here shoehorn a bored out 4.9 into his z34?
Yeah, it was the Matt kid with the body kit.

I thought you wanted to put a 3.4 into you're caddy.

Well, the 4.9 is the only was to go. It fits really tight, but it fits, overall its not worth it.

There used to be a company that put 4.9's bored to a 5.0 and they put em in these cars.

EDIT: 1

The HT4100 was also known as the Hopeless Trash 4100.

Lots of reliability problems, not very good power.

Just get rid of the Caddy and leave the Hopeless Trash in it.

the 4100 is a POS the 4.9 isnt much better but atleast it has 190-200 HP the later year 4.9's in the 90s where not that bad 275HP IMO if you where going to do it..I would start with the 4.9 and build it get it to a 5.0 do the heads valves everything from cam to pan and get it pushing some HP how ever finding parts to make the thing go are few and far between.....

I had a 4.6 32V stiing around and was going to put it in my 91 cutlass and I got it mounted with the caddy tranny how ever I did not know enough about the motor back then to get it running and then I found out all I needed was the guages out of the sts I had parted out to make the thing run...this was back in 1996.

I might just keep the caddy the way it is and junk it, I had bought a second Caddy, 1986 Fleetwood Touring Edition.. I don't know much about it except that it has a body kit with a spoiler and it looks as if it came from the factory that way. I might just fix that one up and make it faster. Its got all leather and its allright overall. NOW as far as the CUT goes, cams should be the next step, as well as the alternator. Rims should also be coming this way. Well thanks for setting me straight on the Bigger is Better deal. By the way did that kid ever Let you all know how the Z24 came out with that 4.9?
