no1kicker
I know there are a few threads about this topic already... In the past (like last summer) if I hit the gas and let off, I would smell gas. I found out I had 1 AC delco coil and 2 unknown brand ones. I had a low boost / misfire / starting running on 4 cyl's problem a couple months back. When I swapped in 3 AC delco coils, it fixed the problem. (Thanks gutless ) his were AC delco coils. Whlie using the AC coils for a few days, there was no gas smell. At the time I didn't think anything of it. I now have 3 new coils (the cheapo ones) from advance auto in my car now. After putting the cheap coils in, I noticed a slight drop in performance from the AC coils. Not much, but I noticed. But now I get almost a breathful of gas if I floor it and let off. So I have decided the cheapo coils on my car suck, but they probably work fine for a n/a car. (they work fine for everything else.) So now I want to get either AC delco coils, or MSD ones. I guess I could try to look for some used AC delco's to try and save money. It looks like they are about the same price. MSD's go for about $45 each. Anyone know where to get them cheaper? And will a 97+ GTP use the same part # 8224? The coils look to be the same, and if they are, I might get them and transfer them over if I get GTP. So I guess what I'm saying, is in my situation would you get new delco's, used delco's, or get some MSD's.
GP1138
Go with stock AC coils. There's no reason to buy anything but what the manufacturer recommends when it comes to ignition system components.
john99gtp
i agree with john. hey greg, how are those wires holding out they still in one piece? and i agree, the coils look the same. edit: however they seem to be very different: GM Part # for L67 Coils: 10477602 GM Part # for L36 Coils: 10472401 GM Part # for 3100 Coils: 10472401 This is for 97+, not sure about 3.1Turbo. Im going to guess they arent the same, since the 3.8 takes different coils depending on if you have the supercharger or not. My $0.02 somone chime in to correct me where needed
cutlsp
seems like L32 coils will work in a bind for people that need new coils that have 3100s
GutlessSupreme
3.1 turbo coil part # = 10497771 as per http://www.geocities.com/grandprix_ste/lowerpn.html #26 But, GM Parts Direct shows that this is no longer a valid number. RareGMFan
All the L67 owners use MSD coils #8224, which is also the same one for just about any GM, including the 3.1's. They actually burn no hotter then the GM Delco ones, so you will NOT see a performance gain. It's merely for the looks (red coils are COOL!). So if you're getting them, you should only be doing it for cosmetic purposes. Jegs has them at $44.99 a piece with $10 handling fee for all 3 combined, total $144.96. I swear GM updates alot of their part numbers because nearly every number stamped on something back in 1992 I can't find.
