Guest TurboSedan
does the '94 L27 need high octane gas? i live at high altitude so my choices are 85, 87, or 91. what should i use? fwiw i used 85 octane in my Cutlass (back when the 3.1 was NA of course) and it ran great for almost 120,000 miles with 85. mfewtrail
Run the 85. Our "regular" here is 87(I live @ 700' or so above sea level 8) ).
Guest TurboSedan
kick ass gas is freaking ridiculous right now. when i drove my GTS i had to use 91 and that costs $2.349/gallon right now! buying 85 would be a relief. thanks Matt
J
i wouldn't run that lawnmower gas through the turbo engine, but thats me. Most forced induction cars require premium, so i'd at least use
cutlsp
i would try the lowest grade gas if the car pings go up a level if it still pings well looks like you have to use premium :?
THe_DeTAiL3R
I'd use 87, or try a 87/85 mixture. It's not supercharged so you should be fine without premium.
mfewtrail
It's a 9.0:1 compression NA 3800 for god's sakes, at his altitude, 85 octane is adequate. L TWENTY 7, not sixty. 8)
digitaloutsider
Werd. The L27 and 87 octane is half of the reason I bought an SSE over an SSEi (other reason was insurance)
Guest TurboSedan
Werd. The L27 and 87 octane is half of the reason I bought an SSE over an SSEi (other reason was insurance) that, and it seemed like most SSEi supercharged cars i came across were beat on compared to the NA SSEs. in a way i prefer the L27 simply because i think it's more reliable without the SC, gets better gas mileage, and of course, it's just going to be my daily driver. my Cutlass on the other hand, gets modded
99RegalGS
It's a 9.0:1 compression NA 3800 for god's sakes, at his altitude, 85 octane is adequate. L TWENTY 7, not sixty. 8) All series 1 3800's are actually 8.5:1 compression. 85 should be plenty for the L27.

Also, it's reported as 9.0:1 by a lot of other places. Where did you find the 8.5:1 figure at?
Grand Moff Joseph
go with 87. Not as $$ as 91, but not as crappy as
chadz34
No the L27 doesn't require high octane but I would use 87 octane and put the odd blast of 91 through it. That should keep her running like a top.
Guest TurboSedan
i'm going with 85 due to my elevation and the L27 isn't high compression. and it'll save me money of course.
cutlassdude96
8.5:1 is the SC 9.0:1 is the N/A

Where did you find the 8.5:1 figure at? I used to think the 93+ L27's had 9:1 compression (that's what the chiltons manual said, older ones had 8.5:1 according to the manual). Then someone on a different forum said he knew the compression was 8.5:1 on all series 1 3800's. Seems like he knew 3800's, so I believed him.... Sean, do you have your owners manual still for your 93? I got my dad to look in his 1994 owners manual last night and he said they didn't even list the motor specifications(I know my 93 GP's owners manual lists the specs for the available engines that year).
