ZOOMOLDS
Is is possible to swap the cradle and front suspension from a 1997 gtp into a gen 1 w-body? (91 olds cutlass supreme) will the struts and hubs swap? also will the rear suspension swap? I am just curious.. I bought a donor car and was wondering if they are interchangeable... GOT2B GM
Sounds like you really want to drive a 97 GTP
pwmin
what did you buy the donor car for and which one is the donor?
ZOOMOLDS
l67 into my 1991 cutlass... i hate the suspension on the cutlass. transverse leaf rear and front cartridge struts. so has anyone tried to swap suspension? and why won't it work? does it not bolt up? too wide? will the l67 bolt to my cradle? let me know.. i'm sure i will find out in 2 weeks... Canada
Whats so bad about the transverse leaf? Its an independant suspension that has a lower center of gravity than anyother.
Busch
digitaloutsider, do you know why the 97+ GP cradle & frt suspension won't fit in the older w cars?
digitaloutsider
Subframe: Too wide, too long. The suspension is completely different in the back. The front won't bolt up to the subframe or the strut tower mounts. Why even bother?
cutlsp
i would get a sub frame from a buick regal with the 3800 in it so you would have less work to do in the swap but you still have to do the wiring which is a ton of work
THe_DeTAiL3R
The price of a beatup used 97+ is so cheap I wouldn't waste my time and money into attempting a swap like that..
cutlsp
The price of a beatup used 97+ is so cheap I wouldn't waste my time and money into attempting a swap like that.. this is a good point dave but if he got a great deal on a 97+ that had been t-boned or rear ended then by all means he could look into doing the swap its what he wants to do. all we can really do is offer some advice on the subframe and wish him good luck. THe_DeTAiL3R
Yeah but a t-boned car is probably gonne have a f'd up subframe and stuff anyways. **I'm not putting down L67 swaps, cause I love gen1 w-bodies**
digitaloutsider
If you want to put the ENGINE in, then yes, just grab the subframe from a 3.4/3800 1st gen-W. There's no point in trying to get the 97+ one to fit.
GnatGoSplat
Whats so bad about the transverse leaf? Its an independant suspension that has a lower center of gravity than anyother. It is technically better. Less weight and also more resistant to body roll making a larger sway bar unnecessary. Not to mention I'm still not convinced that 97+ 3-bolt hubs are bigger than first-gen 4-bolt hubs (they look smaller and have a higher failure rate). I'm also not convinced the first-gen knuckles are weaker, they appear to be a more rigid structure, IMO. Rear suspension definitely won't swap, the strut towers are too small for coil springs. The engine will bolt to the cradle no problem. 3800 Series 2 or Series 3 will bolt right to any 88+ cradle.
