veritasz34
I wanting to remove and polish the plenums..I can spin a wrench a little but I'm no Mr Goodwrench..I was wondering if anyone had some pics or tips on what to do or not to do when removing and installing these things..The polishing will not be that hard I'm just concerned about what all has to be removed and any "Touchy" areas to avoid..I'm mostly intimidated by the rear one (One with the throttle body attached)..Any hints/help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks... pwmin
just get the fel-pro gaskets, the gm ones arent any better. get the maf gasket (if you decide to take that off, but its not necessary if you take the maf adapter arm off completely), maf adapter gasket, and upper intake plenum gasket. i got both maf and adapter gaskets from advance (fel-pro) (got here the next day) and the intake gasket from car-quest (got here same day) (not sure if advance has that one separate or not). all three gaskets were like 6-7 bucks or something. that was my 96 gp though. what year is your car? Schudini
I am planning to do the same thing. Is there any thing that can be put on the polished surface to keep it looking good for awhile? I found this stuff called Zoop Seal in the Summit catalog (~$130), but wanted to see what was out there.
veritasz34
Well I tried to get the upper plenum off and it is beyond my skills..The darn hose clamps were a pain and there is alot of sensors attached to this thing..I'm just too chicken to do it (Mainly because I have very little idea on what I'm doing)..If I could get it off I can polish it..Guess I'll have to see if I can get a mechanic to do in my garage for some on the side money... To keep a polish try Meguires metal restorer..Gives the open aluminum a nice shine and it seems to last alot longer than just mothers...I personally wouldn't seal it up..Every clear coat on every polished piece seems to take away the luster..But thats only my opinion.. White93z34
i can get a 3.4 plenum off in 10 minutes or less. just keep at it, the first time always takes awhile
veritasz34
Well whats getting to me is I don't have the proper tools to compress the hose clamps..I'll take care of the soon enough..The second is the EGR ? assembly is attached to the plenum and has some type of plumbing that I'm afraid I'll mess up..Other than that it looks (Key word) easy.. The other hurdles seem to be easy but all the plumbing on this thing is what is throwing.. Too bad you are not close too me..10 minutes and a beer or two and I could be polishing.. BTW I'm working on a 92 Z...
5speedz34
The plumbing all you have to do is remove 2 10? mm bolts and it swings out of the way, don't worry you won't fuck it up. Just get some pliers for the hose clamps.
fargo_182
that 'plumbing' I believe is the tube that connects to the exhaust to bring gases to the EGR. When you take off the EGR you will find that it is its own piece under the EGR, then another gasket, then the intake. You don't have to remove any of it, just the two bolts holding the EGR in place holds this as well. It then slides out of the way You won't learn til you get them hands dirty! goodluck
veritasz34
You are so right..I had to order a hose clamp pliers..Local parts dealers just don't cut it around here..I'll give it another shot when I actually get some tools to work on those clamps..They are a bugger to try to get to with my regualr pliers..I'll get it done with the help from this board..Thanks again guys...
