twind
I've just dropped in a 3100 into my 91 reagl runs fine drives fine, but when the throstat is in the over heat light comes on little bit not bright red but also not bearly red. without the thereostat it does not come on at all. when filling with collant the air vents should be left open right. i filled then drove let air out then again. i've only had for three days now. any ideas? i hope it not the head gaskets that's why this motor was replaced in first place, if so how can i check the head gaskets. on older cars they used foam in the radidator when they were bad or white smoke out of the exhaust pipe. I also put the stat into water and heat it to 195 and the stat opened about a 1/4 of inch how far should they open or do i have a brand new faulty stat. You could have a faulty stat, even if it is brand new.

Dan94Z34
Change the stat out again. If the car is still overheating you may have gotten air into the system. If that is the case your going to have to blead the air out. On the 3100 the bleed screw is on top of the pipe that connects to the back of the water pump. Crank it open with the motor running and close it once water starts running out. Do this a couple of times, and all of the air should be out of the system.
