Bad Luck with the Cutlass! EGR

I am a licensed mechanic and this one baffles me. When you get going around 3K you can hear a air rushing sound, and then it hard shifts. When you rev it around 3k in park it sounds like air rushing by the EGR. I replaced the EGR and all the gaskets, and it is still doing it. I had the GM expert that I apprenticed under and he thinks the computer is going bad, but I don't think it would cause the air rushing. He also suggested cutting off the exhaust and trying that, to see if it was so clogged, it would cause the backpressure to come back throught the engine, chopped it off for a test, still same thing. I thought I would come to you guys and see if anyone else had this particular problem. Thanks in advance!

I also am a licenced Mechanic, and have worked for a GM dealership for a short amount of time.

 

A PIECE OF PAPER CAN NOT TELL YOU THAT YOU FIX CARS. It just says you understand how they work...

 

Also - car model/engine/year/ect...would be really, really nice... :bash:

 

I'm sorry for the rant - but I'm sick of people passing a test saying they are a mechanic - and they can't fix shit!

Where do you guys get these "liscenses" I hear about all the time. I've been working for Ford for about 3 years now and I haven't taken any classes or tests other than college. Just a fancy way to say you're paid to work on cars?

I too am sick of that stereotype of the license mechanic, I have worked at a shop for over 6 years, and also went to college, for a variety of mechanic, stuff, I put the LICENSE MECHANIC, so people would know i tried the little stuff. 1994 cutlass Supreme convert. 3.4l dohc, thanks for your help! and Rant!! LOL!! Its all good!

In the state of Michigan you are required to be Licenced before you touch a car... (Actucally pass a state-mandated test and they will send you a certificate and you gotta mail that w/ 20 bucks to get a piece of paper saying you can work on cars...)

 

Hm...DOHC 3.4...Just toss it... :lol:

 

Don't mess too much w/ 3.4 DOHC over here - sorry man. I'm sure others will chime in. Also, spaces, Capitals, and periods are your friend.

some places in NY here, like at my dads work, they hire people off the street who dont know anything about what they are doing and tell the to fix these cars, and them you have the people who have been workin on cars for 20+ yrs there, some places just dont care anymore

I think you're hearing air coming from elsewhere(vacuum leak) rather than from the EGR valve(the hard shifts from the transmission are one indicator of a vacuum leak, the air "rushing" sound is another typical sign of a vac leak). By the way, just for the sake of looking, have you put the car on a scanner(tech II or the like) to see if the computer is properly commanding the EGR on/off(open/closed)?

I checked a few things, cleaned out the EGR passages again, and un hooked the exhaust and blew the passages out. Seems to be working good now, Tranny has alittle shifting hesitation, and I will check the vacuum lines to see if one isn't in bad shape, the vacuum line for the tranny runs under the upper plenum right. Thanks too all for your help, love it or hate it when it comes to the DOHC.

Theres a line that runs underneath the Plenum that goes from the driver side of the plenum to the passenger side of the plenum and then straight back. The line is aluminum and runs directly underneath the powersteering fluid box. It looks like it runs directly to the box itself but it does'nt as it runs to the transmission.

 

I have seen these break under the plenum or around it.

 

Check it out if your willing to pull off the plenum.

If your new to the 3.4 TDC, and your car is 91-early93, it could be the normal intake "howl" associated with them at around 2,000 rpm or so. Take note of when you notice it, this was why the plenums were changed on later engines. I think this might also be addressed in a GM technical bulletin somewhere.
