It will either have a really high idle, 2000rpm, or stall on decel and not hold an idle at all.
ShutDaFukUp
its weird ... idle is fine ...just when i go 2 accelerate it will do it .....and then some days it dont .... hell if i know im prolly gonna buy a code reader maybe that mite telll me
3pt1lumina
Couple of questions?... How new are the plugs/wires? Is there an SES light on? If so get that coded then see what that is. Only other thing I can think of is it may be is clogged injectors or a bad TPS.
ShutDaFukUp
um plugs are new ...wires not 2 old .......no ses light .... whats weird is ...my damn temp sensor went out for the 2nd time ...so instead of buyin another sensor i bought me a temp gauge .....well anywayz i installed it and all ....and my damn ses light came on ....so well i figured out the original temp wirin was causin it ...so i plugged old sensor (which is dangling since i have new gaugge plugged in ) and ses light went away ...my question is ....would somehow this be causin it ? seems like it didnt start this whole prob til i went 2 the after market temp gauge

IAC .. TPS...EGR .???? and does my car have a MAP sensor and would this be causin it ? no ses light on at all .....i havent got around 2 gettin a code reader . or havin it checked out
DiscoStudd
Wasn't 88 the year they had that screwed-up MAF system that was recalled? As far as the whole "temp sensor" deal goes, it sounds like you pulled the wrong sensor. There are 2 sensors. One for the gauge/idiot light, one for the ECM. The one for the gauge has a single green wire running to it (lemme clarify: if the car has an idiot light, it'll have a single green wire. If it has a gauge, it'll have a green wire and a green wire with a black stripe.) The sensor for the ECM has 2 wires running to it (most likely gray and yellow.) Sounds to me like you took out the wrong sensor...
ShutDaFukUp
well the sensor i pulled was rite by the thermostat housin ..(2 wires black and yellow ). a copper lookin sensor .. where would the 1 ur talkin about be ? and the MAF would it cause what im describing ? DiscoStudd
Try looking on the rear head for the temp sensor (at least that's where I remember hearing it was located on the 2.8/3.1) I don't remember the exact symptoms, but there was a discussion about the whole 88/MAF problem a while back. IIRC, the recall involved removing the MAF, converting it to MAP, and installing a new chip. I'm sure someone will chime in any time now with the correct info... Lee
YEP! you pulled the wrong sensor. The one near the thermostat is for the ECM, (on 3.1 cc). The one for dash gage is back behind the motor on the driverside. And my experience was that it was only one green wire on the gage one. I switched out a base dash cluster for a UB3 and changed the rear temp sensor so I would get variable readout on my cluster. The new sensor was still one green wire. The one near the thermostat is definately for the ECM. Just hook the original one back up and switch out the rear one. Thing is.... .....the ECM temp sensor is like a spark plug....no wire hanging off, the wiring harness connector snaps to the sensor. The gage sensor has a green wire pigtail about 10"long with a connector on it....that snaps into the wiring harness connector. Might have trouble mating your aftermarket temp gage to the harness. sonyman87
thats what my car was doing when the MAF sensor was giving bad Readings. but that wasnt the only thing wrong with my car. needed a new fuel pump a few weeks later
DiscoStudd
This link describes how to convert an 88 2.8 w/MAF over to MAP: http://www.wbodysource.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=
