dsgrntld187
Okay, the other day my car started running really shitty. It misses, and it sounds somewhat like a tapping noise when I rev it up. Acceleration is slow as hell, and at certain RPMs the motor feels like its going to shake apart. It's almost like when you run low on gas and are just running on fumes. If its a headgasket leak, I can get them replaced for free, but what are some other things it could be?

Don;t know if that would cause that tapping noise, but if it's shuddering like that it could be not getting enough fuel. Things to look for: Is the exhaust now a different color or blacker than before? Does being on an incline up or down make a difference? Is the temperature higher or lower than usual? Ditto oil pressure? Are the plugs messed up?
chadz34
IT'S CUTLASS SEASON! It will get through this man.
JoroCorona
Check your coil packs. Sounds like you might have a bad pack.

Actually I believe the exhaust is a little blacker, incline makes no difference, temperature has been up since it got a little warmer, oil pressure is normal, and I haven't checked the plugs yet (No room for downtime until the weekend). I sure hope its something like coil packs. How much do good coils cost? Either Delco or MSD, either one.
cutlsp
get used coils from a junk yard for 30 much cheaper
89SupremeCutty
get used coils from a junk yard for 30 much cheaper don't get coils from a j/y because u dunno if they work or not, and besides if they don't work j/y usually don't take back electricle parts that i know of, at least around here
cutlsp
the coils cost over 120 brand new delco brand so it was a suggestion
dsgrntld187
You know, with the coils you might be on to something. I accidentally got them wet a month or so ago, and when I started it the next time one whole bank of cylinders wasn't firing for about 30 seconds. Car ran like.. well.. shit to say the least. It went back to normal, but it ran similar to the way it is now except a LOT worse.
cutlsp
it might be the icm then :?
19Cutlass94
my dads' friends truck had basically the same problem that your having although on a different car, his prob was that inside the cat, there was a piece of rust that was blocking exhuast flow so when he stepped on the gas the truck basically wanted to just quit running. something to look into...... dsgrntld187
.. Could that be part of the rattling I hear in the exhaust?
cutlsp
my cat was rattleing like crazy for a while then i started to have the problems you described so i would cut out the cat if you don't have emissions its cheaper then a new cat
19Cutlass94
you shouldnt have any rattling in the exhuast at all so if there is, you know theres a problem with it and in your case , the problem could very well be with the cat
cutlsp
my muffler is making a popping sound every since they put a new high flow cat in my car. now i need a high flow muffler or dual mufflers :?
dsgrntld187
Someone said the baffles in the muffler were coming loose. Doesn't matter really because a dual Flowmaster system is going to be put in its place soon.
19Cutlass94
speaking of exhuast, I need to replace mine this yr, but I dont think a muffler could cause whats goin on with your car....
GP1138
Get an ICM from a junkyard. Most of them have warranties around here, and it's much cheaper. I had to do this to my old GP, and it was like a new car after I replaced them.

All you need is a multimeter. If its the coilpacks get the module with them, as they have a tendency of dying also.
White93z34
thing is with an intermitent problem a suspect coil can test good, but have an intermitent failure.
comptech_69
hmmm point taken. but wouldnt you notice a variance between the coil pack with the intermitent problem and one without?
Crimson Fury Z
if its the icm, you're gonna hear much popping and sputtering and BIG hesitation to run, if it can stay running at all. coil pack(s), mine were replaced yesterday, and before i did em, the car would shudder and hesitate to move up to 3,500rpm, then above that it would run sort of better. no popping or sputtering came w/ the bad coil(s). i got mine from advanced for $20 a pop, the icm was around the same price, give or take a few dollars. FastSE2DR
hmmm point taken. but wouldnt you notice a variance between the coil pack with the intermitent problem and one without? nope hence why its called an intermitent problem...it only happens at certain times so it would not be showing all the time... dsgrntld187
Mine isn't intermitent though, the only time it doesn't do it is on a cold start up to about 30 mph, then it starts and continues at any speed.
