chadz34
You get 10W-35. It wouldn't mess up I don't think. I'm not the best person to ask about this stuff. Just thought I'd post to try and help you. I don't see how it could mess anthing up. But if you're not sure DON'T DO IT.
Smoke1991
your fine, as long as you dont go as high as 75w-90 its just thicker i beleive. i use 10 40 and sometimes 15 40 if im a cheap prick (got a bunch of 15-40 in my gurage) but i dont know exactly what it would do. TGPilot
Running another weight temporarily will not hurt anything...but have you ever seen a motor packed full of sludge? That is what you get when you constantly mix oils for long periods of time. One oil will cook over before the other...they do not mix for an all new weight! (10w-35?? )...and then coat the internal engine parts. While it is coated and cooking it will form sludge in the motor. 8)
cutlsp
what if you change the oil and only use the new weight oil in the motor will the sludge slowly go away? because my car used to run 10 w30 max life but i have decided to run 10w40 in it until it starts having problems then i'll send it in to get fixed
Canada
Why mix two oils?
rshissler
i have 10w-30 in a 5 quart bottle and 2 quarts of 10w-40 and i was just wonderin if it would harm my engine if i used the 10w-30 and then toped it with 10w-40 to make it 6 quarts. there both the same brand name and stuff Quaker State 4x4 and SUV oil. cutlsp
i would just use the 5 quarts then drive to the auto store and get another quart of the 10w30. it won't harm your engine being a quart low i don't think
Brian P
if you drive what you have in your sig, 5 qts is more than enough.
pitzel
Mixing 10W-30 and 10W-40 should not present any problem whatsoever, aside from a slight loss in efficiency as the mixture itself will be slightly 'thicker' than just straight 10W-30. There are no compelling reasons to do it deliberately, but if you have a quart of 10W-40 sitting around you need to get rid of, there will be no harm done. Brian P
what about running 30-weight (HD)?
THe_DeTAiL3R
Yeah, you can't kill a 2.8 that easily... by putting slighlty thicker oil that is. I'd use it but next oil change run some engine flush to help clean it out (which is good to do anyways). I also agree with this statement: if you drive what you have in your sig, 5 qts is more than enough. One 4.4L jug (that's about 5 qts I thinK) I JUST RIGHT for my car, and was the same for my 2.8. rshissler
its for a 300 I6. Why would i put 4x4 and SUV oil in my regal?

joey b
my old 2.8 had bad main bearings and I ran it with 20W50 for the entire time that I had it. Kinda bad for the fuel efficiency, but didn't hurt the engine that already had 160K miles on it. It actually helped it by providing for a better oil pressure. rshissler
there updated my sig. I'm guessin it wouldn't hurt it but im gonna save the 10w-30 for this winter and use the 10w-40 for this summer or do i have this backwards? pitzel
No you have it right rshissler. I personally just run 0W30 year round, works great, almost a year and half since I changed it last and it still looks great on the dipstick. WhiteMonteZZZ
Here's a question: I just changed my oil with Mobil 1 synthetic. I put 2 15w-50's and the rest 5w-30's in my car for summer to slighty thicken the oil. What effects woudl this pose? WMZZZ
pitzel
WhiteMonteZZZ, probably very similar in viscosity to a 10W-40. You live in the Northern United States, there really isn't any good reason to use anything other than 5W-30 or 10W-30 if you are using Mobil-1.
