OldsmoBeast
hey......can we not flame Toyota here people? Our Lexus (ie. Camry in a tux) is one of the best cars i've ever driven and probably ever will drive. My friend's family has bought nothing but Toyotas (and a new BMW 745iL) for as long as I've known them and i've gotten to drive almost all of them and they're great cars...granted none of them are more than 4 years old, but they're well-built, have easy access to everything (in the Lex, i can work the radio (which is up top by the way) with thick-ass winter gloves on, and adjust the temp of my seatheater (not to mention the whole car) to half a degree!) All of the people we know that own camrys love them and maybe that should tell you something about the car. Not everyone likes the W-Bodys either, but that doesn't make them bad cars in our eyes. Does that mean we're stupid? Most likely not, but neither are the people who think their camrys are good cars. and on a side note, i've only driven a Toyota 4-banger once, so they're obviously not all 4s. what i have driven are a lot of 6s, most of them VVT-i or VVTL-i engines, and 2 really sweet V8 Sequoia SUV. Sorry this post has been so long, but I feel really passionately about all this. Toyota is one of the world's biggest automakers and has been around since 1937. Their success might be a hint to the fact that their doing something right. GM might be the worlds biggest but Toyota's not far off.
GPRACER
I got a toyota forklift back on the farm, it's a 1969 model so we know that they are reliable. they still use the same engine thats in the old forklift, the 22RE. Hahahaha innovation my ass, Did you know that the Toyota Matrix GT uses a Yamaha engine?
OldsmoBeast
ok well that's a shame.....and actually the matrix is one of the cars I really think toyota made a big mistake producing. The Matrix, Echo, Prius, Rav4, Tercel, Corolla, and a few others are all POS cars, agreed, but the Camry, Avalon, Soarer, Land Runner, 4Runner, Highlander, Sequoia, Tundra, Sienna, any and every recent Lexus, Celica, and any other Toyota that i've forgotten to mention, are all solid, decent cars. I drove my friend's Highlander through a huge-ass snowbank that i was SURE I couldn't get through, at least not with any other car, and it went through like it wasn't even there. i was surprised, but impressed. Oh and one more thing ( i know it never ends.....) we've owned this Lexus for 4 years now, and have only ever had 1 problem with it. one of the computers had some kind of issue and it put the Trac Off light on. we took it to the dealer and they replaced the control module that was faulty (was covered by warantee) and we've NEVER had ANY problems since. I mean NOTHING. not even the slightest little annoyance. as opposed to the CS which came standard with all the little annoyances and has so many problems (it's expected of an old car,) that i've lost track of what they all are, and a lot of the time just ignore them! This is why I hate it when anybody tries to flame Toyota. *sighs*.....I need a drink
Brian P
Toyota's just making the big trucks for Americans anyway (maybe a spot or 2 in the mid east?), otherwise all they would offer are those cars that you listed under "POS". OldsmoBeast
OK, sure i'll go with u on the trucks issue just to keep this flowing, but how do u explain all their good cars? Take the Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS 300 for example? or the Celica GT-S? the Altezza has been around in europe and japan for a long time but was only available in North America since maybe 99? and it's definately not POS
GPRACER
I am quite familiar with just the matrix, its the same vehicle as the pontiac vibe, and I have worked on those. I can't complain about Toyota, they are definately not garbage. I just sold my toyota pickup not long ago. I bought it new in 1992 put 256,000 kms on it, had zero problems with it other than brakes, tires, and a muffler, regular maintenance. It didn't rust at all and I live in a terrible place for rust, I paid 13,000 for it and sold it for 5,000 how's that for resale value. I would absolutey kill for an early RWD supra in mint condition. OldsmoBeast
ooh! I know what you mean.....u referring to the MA70 supras? those were nice. the twin turbos were even nicer. but good luck finding one in good condition!
GPRACER
Not sure what you mean by MA70, but I'm talking about the '84-'86 models, somewhere around that time. Definately not a ricer and would definately want turbos.
OldsmoBeast
IIRC, MA70 was the bodystyle code for the supras of that period. I could be wrong though...but yah definately not rice. just fast.
Brian P
Take the Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS 300 for example? or the Celica GT-S? the Altezza has been around in europe and japan for a long time but was only available in North America since maybe 99? and it's definately not POS I never said they're crap cars, just Boring. Lexus IS 300/GS300 boring, Toyota Solara-boring. Camry-extra boring. Celica-boring. I'm falling asleep right now thinking about them, and it's inside and out that those cars just put me to sleep. Honda is no better. Their engines are called reliable, but I don't see how they are any better than GM engines. At least with most GM engines, you don't have to rev it past 5000 rpm's to get some power. That is a good explanation for why I usually see Toyota's, Hondas, nissan's, etc puffing blue smoke in front of my car in traffic, Never a GM car. I have no explanation of Chryslers smoking other than knowing that mitsubishi is involved. But again this is all off topic and for another thread, not "SL package"
OldsmoBeast
well I'll agree with you but they're not completely boring....just some. I don't find my adaptive variable suspension boring.....it's pretty amusing being able to control the level of damping in your car...lol and there's a lot of other non-boring things about them....it's just a matter of taste and opinion....."opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and thinks everyone else's stinks." GPRACER
Not all toyotas are boring, I'll agree to that too, I love my american cars for sure, nothing gets my blood racing more than a romp down the 1/4 in my '74 Dart, but american cars can be boring too, have you driven a base model sunfire lately? hardly awe inspiring. How about the ford focus(fuckup) or the mercury mistake(mistique)? I have a very open mind when it comes to the automotive world, manufacture's brands don't mean dick to me. When you see the pride in someone's eyes after completing a project on their own, thats the best part. Right from the 16 year old and the tint on his Civic to the 60 year old who's setting the points on his GTO, it's the same thing. Pride. And, don't think that GM doesn't make junk, they make lots, and thank god that they do or myself and a lot of other technicians would be out of work. And just to stay on topic, my GP is an SE model, I always thought it meant "standard equipment"
OldsmoBeast
hmm Standard Equipment.....never thought of that. possible
Brian P
I'll agree to that, as it is just my opinion and not fact. I dislike some of the crap GM attempts to build, especially lately. As for SE being standard equipment, what's LE? Less Equipment?
godofthunder
My friend at work loves toyotas. He owns a mint Tin Turbo Supra and a 2000 MR-2 spyder. The supra is amazing. He put the largest turbos on it. REdid all the interior, and some other custom things. The exhaust you can stick your arm into. you can hear it seriously a mile away. the Spyder is his Beater car. Right now he is trying to get it under 2000 pounds. He just put a new exhaust on it, all custom. I wish I had some pics. This guy is anything but ricer. Not big into stereos either. Just fast cars. and we work at a grocery store. I guess you can afford all that when you dont pay rent. . Jon
GPRACER
Stereo just adds weight you want real music spend the money on exhaust upgrades.
