Overdrive to Neutral....er I mean first.

Folks,

92 regal,

3800.

Automatic (obiously)

90 000 miles.

The car works fine, except it needs a wheel bearing, a CV joint, and two rear shocks. I'm not going to fix any of that until I figure out if the transmission is on its way out.

If I keep it out of overdrive I never have any problems. If I put it in overdrive I never have any problems.... until I stop.

Seems when I stop the thing goes into neutral instead of first, manually shifting it into first when stopped will get the transmission to engage, alternatively, if you stomp on it long enough it will kick in as well.

Haven't changed fluid lately, though levels are good, and color is good.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Matt

your shifter cable may be loose at the trans or the shifter check for play that might let it pop into neutral if the engine mounts are worn or move too much.

this is probably the case since the trans doesnt do it in D versus Od which is right next to Neutral.

after comming to a stop in Od will it move if you just put it into D and not first?

good luck

Im going to go with the loose shifter cables. The TCC will lockup in plain D in 3rd gear just like it will in 3rd and 4th in OD. My shifter, after having the tranny rebuilt is somewhat loose, it wont do what you described, but its just not firm like it was.

Plus, the TCC gets its signal from the ECM based on VSS and engine load (MAP, I think), and since the ECM doesnt know what gear a 4T60 is in at anytime (except it knows if its in P/N or "moving"), the TCC couldnt be it

Turbo,

The car won't move unless I put it in first, then there's a noticable clunk as it engages again.

The indicator (PDRN2L) on the dash is broken too, that may be an indication that the cables aren't wearing the best....

My lumina would do this when I tried to put her in gear when the intake gaskets were shot. Idle at about 2400 rpms. Putting it in drive would do nothing, but shifting it to first would cause a pritty massive thud into first gear. After that it would be okay.

what about D or 2nd do these positions work after comming to a stop in OD? the clunk is probably an engine/trans mount or the slack being taken up in the CV joints, diff and chain in the trans.

there is a possibility that one of the shuttle valves in the trans has a piece of grit/burr that is preventing normal movement.

the indicator in the dash is a seperate cable to the colum/console shifter and doesnt hook up to the main trans shifter cable, there is also the possibility that the trans range switch is bad and only the 1st gear possition is functioning telling the computer what to do.....

After Stopping when the car is in OD, the only way it seems to "Like" to get going again is if you put it in first. If you put it in first it very happily engages and then you're fine. Should you leave it in over drive you can feather the gas pedal a few times, and it *may* engage, but that's no fun when the guy behind you is leaning on the horn.

Putting it in 2nd or D have no effect if the car is stuck in neutral. The only sure fire way that I've found to get it into gear is by putting it in first.

The range switch is an interesting theory.... but then why would it only happen after being in OD and not D.... I can't think of what is so special about OD and first.

I guess that any time a problem exists in OD and not D it is possible that it's the TCC, but what would the TCC be doing in this case, I don't think its stuck engaged, but I don't know enough about it. Maybe its time to take it to the tranny shop. If they tell me that I need a rebuild I'll just tell them that I don't, I only need 3 gears!

Your problem is not related to the TCC or any other part, when placed in 1st gear possition the primary shuttle valve mooves to a spot that activates 1st gear directly with the shuttle valve in D or OD the main shuttle valves stays stationary and the rest of the governor sustem works from there to select the gears it needs durring driving your problem is occuring at Deceleration the trans governor or etc is sticking preventing the trans from returning to first gear for another drive cycle.

you probably have some debris somewhere in the trans or a sticking valve, or solenoid/governor (newer/older-trans) the alum valvebody could have worn away to cause binding of 1 or more shuttle valves

good luck
